gamehead200 Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 Guys, about a few months ago, I realized that all my wallpapers in the "My Pictures" folder had disappeared from the Wallpaper list under the Desktop tab in the Display Properties. Can anyone give me some sort of reg hack or some instructions on how to get my wallpapers listed there again? Thanks in advance!
bucketbuster Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Try to edit the wallpaper directory in the registry:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion]"WallPaperDir"=
gamehead200 Posted August 22, 2004 Author Posted August 22, 2004 It's always been set to "%SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper", but I can see the images in that folder, but not the one's in the "My Pictures" folder...
bucketbuster Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Why don't you put all the wallpapers from my pictures to the wallpaper folder? Then you should see them.
gamehead200 Posted August 23, 2004 Author Posted August 23, 2004 Why don't you put all the wallpapers from my pictures to the wallpaper folder? Then you should see them. Lazy.
prathapml Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Hah!You know what? I've all along been trying to do the opposite of this. (Make the images in "My Pictures" not show up as options for Wallpapers). It hasn't happened on any of the machines I manage, if it did, I could've done with a fair bit of reverse-engineering.....Don't forget me when the solution to this is found - I'd like to know HOW THE HELL I can replicate what happened involuntarily on your PC.
Mr_ViRuZ Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 sorry to dig up an old post but this is exactly what happened to me last night.Dunno how or why but all the images in my picutes have vanished from wallpapers list (but stay in when manually browsed too).any ideas why?
prathapml Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 LOL, same thing again - tell me when you find out how it happens!BTW, gamehead told that this thing could possibly have happened after the install of a specific program (dunno which one though). Viruz, do you remember what programs you installed yesterday night?Try installing windows in a virtual machine, and check if the wallpapers are available. Then, install the apps you normally install, one-by-one, and check as to which app's install causes the wallpapers to no longer be usable.
Mr_ViRuZ Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 well to be honest i only noticed it last night, god knows how long its been like that
gamehead200 Posted September 26, 2004 Author Posted September 26, 2004 If everyone lists what programs they installed, maybe we can figure out which one has done this...
Mr_ViRuZ Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 heh yeah, whats weird tho is it should be tied to the registery somehow.maybe if the dude who wants to disable searches his hives and looks for 'My Pictures' and jots down where he finds it, we could compare ours with his findings?
prathapml Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 Well, MyPictures wouldn't exist "as such" in either the INFs (in I386) or the .DAT (which make up the registry after install).I dunno why I get this feeling, but.... check if the below command (or something similar) was run with/without your knowledge at any point of time.regsvr32 /u /s mydocs.dllYou know what its for (to get rid of the "My--" series of folders in MyDocuments), and to me it looks the most likely reason you people's wallpapers aren't showing up?Or maybe we wait for a third person to report the same weird-ness, then we see what's similar between all three of your installations....
gamehead200 Posted September 28, 2004 Author Posted September 28, 2004 Reregistering that file doesn't do anything... This is WEIRD...
Mr_ViRuZ Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 k explain this, after numerous things went poof, i decided to reinstall XP on a clean format, installed my sp1 streamed copy (aint got around to streaming sp2 yet) then applied sp2, and gues what?? yep, my pics vanished from desktop wallpaper list again.wonder if something in SP2 borks it (wouldnt suprise me tbh)
