dunno if this has been posted before but i tryed to recieve a .mp3 file off my m8 and it failed :) and spat out the message

The transfer of the file "name here.mp3" has been blocked because it could be unsafe. Why was this file considered unsafe?

when i click the help link i come to this

Why some file transfers are blocked

File transfers are blocked when they contain content that could be used to damage your computer. When someone tries to send a file to you, Windows Messenger first checks to see if the sender is on your list of contacts. Next, the file is put through a security check.

Files that are blocked

Files are blocked when the following occurs:

The file is capable of carrying viruses or harmful code. For example, files with these extensions are considered unsafe for file transfer: .exe, .cmd, .wsh, .bat, .vb, .vbs, .pif, .scr, .scf. For a more comprehensive list of files that are generally considered unsafe for file transfer, see "Information About the Unsafe File List in Internet Explorer 6." (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;291369)

Files that are allowed

You can receive the following file types from someone not on your contacts list:

Files with extensions .jpg, .txt, .bmp, and .gif (not a comprehensive list).

Files for which you need to make a decision

Certain file types should be opened with caution, even if you know the sender. If you receive a file of the following type from someone on your contacts list, a prompt will appear and you will be asked what you want to do with the file. You should only accept the file if you can save it to your computer's hard disk drive and, before you open it, scan it with an antivirus program.

These are the file types for which you will receive a prompt:

Microsoft Office System files: files with .doc, .ppt, or .xls in the file name.

Files from other applications, such as .zip, .wpd, and .pdf.

Note

If you are on a local area network with a firewall (in a corporation, for example), you might not be able to use Windows Messenger to send or receive files outside the firewall. Firewalls can be configured to block file transfers. Check with your network administrator.

now im the admin so thats no prob but when u click the Information About the Unsafe File List in Internet Explorer 6 link i still dont know how to edit the lists so does any 1 know how to edit so i can send and recieve files like in sp1 also the messenger version is 4.7-3000 hope sum 1 knows how to fix it or sumit

But if use remote assistance do not remove windows messenger,

i recently found out that remote assistance requires windows messenger and even though the option is in msn messenger for remote assistance it shall not work unless windows messenger is installed.

Well it will work but not through any messenger without windows messenger.

Hey dudes, this one bugs me as well.

I'm on WinXP Home Edition, US English, SP2. The Windows Messenger blocks transfer of most file-types (including images/ZIP/RAR). This happens whether I've installed slip-streamed or done an upgrade on a pre-existing XP (SP1/SP0) machine.

This happens regardless of whether the Windows Firewall is turned on or off. I figured that since there's no setting in the configuration interface to do anything about this, maybe group policy editor could help. And then I ran "gpedit.msc" on an XP Professional SP2 machine - that still doesn't help, gpedit has nothing to change this behaviour - and I know that I've looked long and hard enough.

This can't be a Windows Messenger related problem - the version of it in SP2 is <4.7.3000> and that works fine on SP1. Those without XP's SP2 update don't have this problem - its definitely related to SP2's new security "Springboard". Wake me up when a solution to this is found.
