Framerate dropping hardcore

hi guys, i have had mad framerate dropping when i am in games like counter-strike, other multiplayer games, ryl, etc. my friend has the same video card as me and he gets no fps drop when looking at any detailed buildings, and im sittin right next to him getting down to 20 =(....could there be some kind of software problem or something, because i know my system can easily handle these games?

i have an amd athlon xp 3000+, 512 MB DDR 400, i don't remember my motherboard exactly, but it's a kt800 chipset and 8x agp. my card is a geforce fx5500 ultra with 256 mb ddr....i don't get this =X

check for spyware virus etc.

defrag your hdd

make sure u have all the latest drivers and patches for games

what rpm is your hdd? maybe your friends' faster.

ow and make sure u close unneccessary applications.

clear your start-up items

stop unneccessary services.

get 61.77 nvidia driver.

get dx9c

hmmm true, my hdd is 7200 rpm..but for some reason it makes that ugly grinding sound (not too harsh as it may sound), but it is 80 gb...and i do have the latest drivers and the directx, checked for viruses/spyware..defragmented...err i don't get this problem...it's such a simple game and my comp can't handle it

make sure u dont have a firewall running .. that can really slow u down

latest sound drivers & lan drivers & mobo drivers (find out your mobo)

try all of the above and if it doen't work, reinstall your (nforce) drivers and reinstall directx9c that may solve the problem
