High speed cd rom drives and split cd's

@All members if you have a high speed cd rom drive 48x-54x including cdr-rw drives

and you have the follwing software or any other software (BACK UP YOUR CD"S)

Windows (NT 4.0 95-98 win2k 2k3) can split or shatter in side high speed drives

programs that you use on a reg basis back them up as iso's to another medium or a hard disk

I have already lost two disk's to the problem

I do not think this problem affects the 4x based dual formant dvd burners or the new dual layer dvd drives but i could be wrong

A friend of mine told me that 48x was safe for a stamped (retail type) disk, and that 52x was fine for a recorded disk. I can't say I've ever personally had a disk explode, though I've heard fairly gruesome (hardware-wise) accounts of the carnage that can happen to your poor disks and drive. I don't know why they put 54x+ drives on the market anyway...

i dont know why i have not seen a 54x rated disk yet but i figured i would inform you guys just incase you had old os'es or programs that you use or collected to just back up your disk's

I agree.. It's happened to me. I though a gun went off. Not to mention that the drive was done for. Look for cracks on the inside cutout ring of CDs. If there is a crack in them the inertia (Edited for you anal people. You know what I meant) placed upon the CDs in the newer high speed drives will cause this to happen.

BUT...while we're on that particular subject, it's inertia (commonly and incorrectly referred to as "centrifugal force") that pulls spinning things apart (they want to move in a straight line) and centripetal force that keeps things spinning (force vector towards the center of the CD in this case...if anyone cares).

Either way, it's something I hope I never see...just thinking of it makes me weep. Unless, of course, it were a WindowsME CD...

Aside from the destroyed CDs I never liked those drives anyway. They are just way too loud; I have seen a few that cause the whole desk to vibrate. I would rather have a slower drive that is quiet and reads disks more reliably; you can barely hear my LG DVD-ROM running.

I have a 52x CD-RW burner... I have a bunch of 52x CD-RWs, but haven't used them yet... Right now, I'm burning CDs at around 30x or so, so its not that bad... It doesn't even make that much noise when burning at a higher speed!

Right now, I'm using a no name brand I got at my local computer store... They work great, and burn at around 30x. I also have another pack of 100 unused CD-RWs from Memorex that are supposed to have a top burning speed of 52x (that's what it says on the spindle).

My burner is an LG-CDRW burner. 52x, 24x, 52x
