BradBo Posted July 15, 2002 Posted July 15, 2002 Hi,I have a Linksys 8 port router with 3 computers on it.The LAN works great. My problem is I cant seem to get out to the internet on some gaming networks and some options of "Windows Messenger".One example is when I enable "Gamespy" gaming network the first screen says I am behind a firewall and I might have problems. Then I can seem to hook up for a multi-player game.I have my XP firewall disabled and my particular computer in "DMZ" mode.Do you think this might have something to do with the router having one address and my computer having another.Or is it because my DSL service might not have assigned me a static IP.This is all a little new to me.I'm just starting to learn about networking. Thanks,Brad
ThA_FiLeR Posted July 15, 2002 Posted July 15, 2002 Did you disable the windows xp firewall? Because I have the same router and im DMZ host and I never have any problems whatsoever. Or do you have any other firewalls on like ZA, BlackIce, Norton Personal Firewall ? If so, put them on lower security level. Hope this helps!
Drewdatrip Posted July 15, 2002 Posted July 15, 2002 Although there is no way to disable the hardware firewall for the entire network, you can go into the linksys settings by typing 192.168.1.1 into your browser and entering the login/password. From there goto advanced>DMZ host and punch in the ip of the particular computer that you want to expose to the Internet. Then if you know what prot each app you can go into Fowarding and set the particular port to the ip address of the the computer using the app.Goodluck -Drew
Aaron Posted July 15, 2002 Posted July 15, 2002 hmm DMZ on a router... I'm planning on building a network soon with a cable modem to 4 machines, I got worried about applications that will refuse to work, such as IIS, FTP Serving, or File Transfers on MSN. DMZ looks like the solution then don't it? As you say... DMZ exposes the computer 100% openly to the Internet, so a software firewall will sort that edit: Is it also possible to open all ports on the IP in DMZ? cos apps like Edonkey and Blubster operates on thousands of port numbers I think

BradBo Posted July 15, 2002 Author Posted July 15, 2002 I did disable the XP firewall.I can play Nascar online all day long no problem but if I try to do Medal of Honor Allied Assault through Gamespy it goes to the game on my hard drive then times out because it says it cant connect.I'm starting to think it is not because I have a router IP address and a DMZ IP address on my machine. It must be the ports. Here is what is really confusing though.I though when you set DMZ "all" your port were open then. So if that is the problem then I really have no idea. One other thing is I want to use some of the other options with windows Messenger and again it says Im behind a fire wall. I am not.
Flash Posted July 16, 2002 Posted July 16, 2002 Its either the ports or Gamespy. I would go with Gamespy. Has troubles with networking and personally i dont use it or like it. Try re-installing gamespy (did you have it previously on this comp before the network?) and find out the ports of your game. Does your modem have a hardware firewall?!
ThA_FiLeR Posted July 16, 2002 Posted July 16, 2002 Well I can't send files over msn although im DMZ host and I also forwared those ports it says in the help section of msn.
