This is a n00b question..but I just am stumped.

i have 2 computers in the same workgroup. I want create the a shared folder so I can swap files between the laptop and desktop.

On my desktop, the sharing function isn't listed in the right click menu.

On the laptop, it is the sharing tab is greyed out. (all the options in it )

Neither are visible on in the workgroup on the home network.

It's 12:07 am, and im stumped. help!

btw..i just reimaged the laptop with a unattended install. could it be one of the settings i did in there?

Sounds to me like you don't have Client for microsoft networks enabled or installed. Once you get that going, the sharing should be enabled. In order for you to see other computers they must be sharing something or you won't see them. Once you fix the first problem, then it will fix the second one.

I went to add/remove windows components and added Other Network File and Print Services

Is that what you mean?

There still is no Sharing and Security tab, or a Sharing... on the right click menu.

Are there services or anything I may be missing?

no u don't need those

during the setup, setup asks u if u want your files to be private or not.

if u choose yes option all your files under documents and settings will be private. and since your desktop is under documents and settings it will be private as well. and if u look at the properties of desktop folder u'll see that the private option is checked.

to get rid of that either

1. make a folder in root directory (c drive) and share that

2. use the shared documents folder (which is under all users)

3.

• go to documents and settings folder
  
• find your user name in there
  
• right click on your user name and click properties
  
• then click the sharing tab
  
• then u'll see the option make this folder private
  
• uncheck that to enable sharing on desktop..
  

I know how to do all that. The problem is that the sharing function doesn't exist.

Did you check to see that Simple File Sharing is disabled?

Go to Tools > Folder Options > View, then scroll to the very last item and uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing"

I guess what has me confused is why you have the property window you do, and not the one attached in the picture. I'm on XP Pro SP1 and I always remember my view being like this. Does anyone know what triggers the old traditional sharing settings?

the problem here is that it might be a subfolder of a "make folder private" check that cuz i see that the make private button is shaded also
