What you guys think of having System File Checking on / off: I've been trying to decide..

Pros:

- Windows files integrity preserved

Cons:

- Creates stupid directories (eg, MSN Game zone, Xerox)

Any others?

personally, i cant stand it, it bugs me, i keep it off, my system is secure enough where nothing will happen, and if it does, thats what my unattended cd is for

so what about the directories... System File Checker keeps the system more stable by keeping 3rd party apps from removing possibly important files.

Drive space isn't much of an issue anymore... unless you are a mark for overnet/kazaa.

Yes, I agree fully with the previous posting. The only thing where it can trouble you is during installation, so it _could_ be good sometimes (not everytime) to switch it off there and then. But while running and using your system for your usual work I belief it's just reasonable to leave it ON: it will prevent more harm than cause any.

I permanently have WFP off on all of my machines. In my experience it only causes trouble.

I've had SFC off since I first installed Windows XP the day it came out and I'm yet to find ANY problems with programs or viruses overwriting protected files.

It basically comes down to how smart you are with computers. If you don't open email attachments and download stupid programs that will cause problems, then your probably better off turning it off.

if your focus is:

I am only doing my PC... so if it blows up, I'll take care of it. Fine turn SFC off

If you are supporting between 3-2,000 PCs turn SFC on

if you are supporting more that 2,000 PCs, turn it OFF as it will not be you running around trying to fix the broken PCs that have deleted the teddybear file

Radimus has a good point... It not only depends on how smart you are with computers but how smart OTHER people are with computers.
