Hmm b: is not such a hot choice after all, since if the machine has even just 1 floppy bay, it won't allow you to assign a USB to drive A: or B: You can get around this by saying SUBST B: K:\ but thats a bit hacky

Cool its sorta works, just have to remap all my shortcuts to use my new profile dir: B:\Docs\Matt\ I thought B: would be perfect for this, because generally this is not taken on other machines.

Gonna reply to my own post: Think you just setup the ProfileImagePath in this regkey HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList Use the correct SID for your profile. Map that to the USB drive and should be good. Going to test it and let you know. You probably have to be carefull to always logout first before you disconnect the USB.

hi folks I have a PC at home and work. I want to use one user profile only, can I do this? I want to store my profile on a removable 2.5" notebook HD. So when I leave work I just pop it in my pocket and at home I'm good to go again, with all my tweaks in one place.

RyanVM kindly sent me the SP2 file as I dont have it installed. Should have a working SP2 version shortly.

I used a popular regfile tweak from a while back, one of the things it disabled was windows time. I get RPC unavailable, this is because the time server is not started. However when I try to start the time server i get. Error 1038: Unable to pblah blah. The fix is simple put it to "Manual" then start it. Then stop it. Then put it to "Automatic" and start it again. If its for one PC or two PC's imaging is superior: Also I have a method to move an image to ANY hardware using a combination of slipstream and imaging. Hal etc can different completely. 1. Install fresh slipstream on new machine 2. Load WinPE/"Any recovery cd" and copy /windows/system32/drivers folder and the HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Enum reg key to another HD/partition/usb drive etc. 3. Restore image from old machine onto new. 4. Boot WinPE/"Recovery cd" copy back drivers and reg key 5. Reboot Compare the time for this (30 minutes) to days/weeks preparing unattented. For personal use unattended is NOT the way to go.

Seems to be some confusion: Generic image: Ok the reason for the generic image is not to run on everyone's machine. Its a generic image for you, with all your preferences, programs installed the way you like it etc. Then when you upgrade your machine every 6 months you dont have to spend days tweaking everything back to normal. With a normal image you upgrade from intel to athlon and you have to start from scratch.

The ideologies are quite different: Slipstream Description: create a perfect XP installation, scripting everything. Pros: 100% compatiblity Cons: Time consuming, difficult, gets out of date quickly, maintenance is hard Generic image: Description: get your system how you want it, then image it without the HW specific stuff. Cons: No clear way to do this, lack of info, possible hardware issues Pros: Much easier, no scripting needed, tweak exactly how you want it, easy to maintain I am halfway through a nice slipstream CD and has taken days of of research etc, when I though, surely there must be an easy way to make a generic image? Surely imaging is the superior approach? I use Sysinternals RegMon, but for the autocomplete feature its not going to help. I think I need a newer dll version of commdlg

You reckon its good to disable STISVC.EXE is "still imaging service". Aparently it speeds up explorer access.

Thanks Im pretty good with google, but there is too much noise. All the stuff that comes up is an explorer.exe command switches. Also dont forget groups.google.com (invaluable) I'll post it if I find it

On a fresh XP install I dont have the nice commdllg that has the Autocomplete feature when typing file names. If that doesnt make sense Im talking about the File->open dialogue which is shared amongst most windows apps. Also it would be a bonus if this windows is by default much larger and in detailed view.

Yeah I've seen those reg hacks around.. just cant remember where. I know about the command line tweaks - but I dont think they can do what I want.
