Win2000 server convert to Workstation ?

Recommended Posts

Can Win2000 server be converted to Workstation?

I saw this link http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/ shows how

to convert a Win2k3 server to workstation.

I have a system which has Win2000 server installed and would like to conver it to run like a Workstation so I don't have to reinstall all the applications, but still allows me to convert it back to server later when needed.

Is this possible?

Thanks....

Is your W2k Server an Domain Controller? and is it the only domain?

I am assuming you want to join your server to another domain?

If it is, then you will need to demote the pc out of the Active directory.

WARNING: you will loose all the users and settings for the AD - this aint fun.

If your W2k server is a member server, then you can still use W2k Server like a workstation anyway, but why do you want to?

Yes! My server was AD and only server on the network.

For some reason, the network stop working even though network drivers loaded.

I even tried installing new NIC card but still can't ping or see any other systems on

the network. Ended up installing a new Domain Server.

Have alot of apps already installed and hate to reformat the drive. Already removed AD but still can't get the network to work. Just wonder if I could convert

to Workstation then figure out why the network doesn't work.

If all fail, I will have to reinstall windows.

Any idea why network does not work?

thanks..

Hmmmm . . . I don't think converting a server to a workstation is going to give you a clue as to why the network does not work. :)

Could it be a driver problem?? Do you have a hardware diagnostics program?

Have you double and triple checked your network settings -- protocol configs, DHCP, DNS, binding order etc.? If running TCP/IP, have you run IPCONFIG? Ping? What were your results, if any?

Have you checked the NIC in the Device Manager -- device conflicts or hardware failure? Reseated the card? Tried a different slot on the motherboard? Tried the card(s) in another PC? Is your hardware on the HCL?

Tested the wall jack? The hub/switch jack? The patch cable(s)?

If nothing here gives you a clue, I'd re-install the operating system.

I Agree...

All the networking needs testing, try moving the pc to another socket that you know works !

You shouldn't need to go as far as reloading the pc... maybe a repair to correct any damaged drivers and service packs.

What is you current network? 10/100, wireless, etc....

You said you have tried another card, was it the same make? and definatly good?

It seems a little odd tho... can you think of anything that may have caused it? i.e. lighting etc?

:)
