The latest update of Java 8 still works under XP

I have recently been re-testing modern versions of Java under Windows XP, having figured out many fixes and workarounds to issues that were present on these newer versions when being ran on that operating system. To be more precise, i have managed to solve a crash with keyboard input, the java control panel refusing to launch, java applets being broken, as well as JavaFX applications and its WebKit component not running. Ultimately, this has allowed me to get the latest and newest revision of Java 8, which currently is 8u421, running on XP without any major bugs or glitches.

This version needs XomPie in order to run, however, instructions for slightly older versions of Java are also available, having been revised to include all of the mentioned workarounds, including JavaFX compatibility, so people can run more modern and stable versions on their original installs. These are available on my website:

Moreover, Windows Vista can also run 8u421, provided Extended Kernel or XomPie are installed on the system. Previous versions have also been revised, for those still running vanilla Vista. More details here:

Hi @blueclouds8666, thank you very much for this. I can confirm that (installing XomPie) the last version of Java, with the modifications you clearly outlined, works in XP. I will try it in apps I use that require java (OpenOffice, Qgis, etc). I don't have XomPie installed in my bare-metal system (afraid of instability) but will try it soon to see what happens. In the meanwhile, I followed your indications to improve the java version (Java 8u251 I use on my bare-metal

I would recommend you to modify this thread to introduce all the software and your inputs at neonfloppy, using the original post to do so, and copying the current article into a sub-post. It's not just good for advertising your page, but to more widely distribute your fine job.

Cheers and congrats.

XomPie is mostly safe, as it can be both installed and uninstalled on the fly without having to restart the system, not replacing or modifying any system file in the process. In any case, if you experience any incompatibility after uninstall, let me know and i will investigate it.

The content published at the software section on my website is, for the most part, not new or groundbreaking (usually because there is nothing new to discover for a given program), even though some people might find it valuable or convenient, due to the fact that each and every version has been manually tested and verified by me, on both 32 and 64-bit environments, with proof screenshot and direct download link provided in place. I prefer to publicize only the bigger and more significant stuff, to avoid the bad minds  arguing that I'm promoting for my sole personal interest, even though i don't seek or make any monetary profit from it. Those that really like what i do can subscribe to my RSS feed or bookmark my website.

I prefer to keep this thread for discussion about Java on XP with and without XomPie. The community input may be helpful in the future if versions newer than 8u421 get broken on XP with XomPie, or if i made any mistake in the released instructions. If i have something new and interesting to bring, i will share it on a new or existing thread.

cool. In vanilla (yet nlited) partition, xompie causes no issues to me. In m heaviliy tweaked partition, it ruins text files rendering: the files load, but can't display text. Something with my settings. I guess I will find a cure eventually. In the meanwhile, installed xomplie and uninstalled it, to keep the files ad firewall sttings and wait for a rainy day.  Be well.
