What is "Multimedia Input Service"? (Win98)

Rebooting Windows, from safe mode, I am prompted with the "Wait, End Task, Cancel" window.

The title is "Multimedia Input Serivce".

In "Process Explorer" I see nothing running, except the bare safe mode minimum. No applications/services initiated, from start-up/registry.

HID means USB keyboards/mice/audio cards/whatever.

Have any USB devices? Does this error occur even without any USB devices plugged in?

Try removing USB controllers in Device Manager/disabling USB in BIOS.

Actually HID means Human Input Devices, not necessarily USB.

Audio cards are not HID, AFAIK.

But MMHID.DLL is related to USB, look at HIDDEV.INF

I don't doubt in the least that MMHID.DLL is related to USB and possibly also connected with audio cards, I only pointed out the meaning of the acronym HID that - in itself - is not strictly related to USB, and has nothing to do with audio cards.

The way Microsoft names its .DLL's and how some of them may well have "mixed contents" is another thing.
