ghost install XP idea

Featured Replies

hello guys . i have made the best dvd i i was imagining ever with your help and i would like to thank u for this .

now , i had an idea but i don't know if it works .

i was thinking as i testing my new version of dvd in vmware , to make a perfect image in vmware , then uninstall the vmware tools and copy the image in a dvd .

it would be a clean xp install .

after that the only think u have to do is to install the board and periherals drivers and u are ready . if i have time i will test it tomorrow to see if that works . i would save me cos i am working in a pc fix shop .

thanx a lot guys ... ...

Since VMWare emulates special hardware it wouldn't be that clean. But it's worth a try. And you don't need to install the VMWare tools in the first place.

i work in a 'pc fix shop' too and i wouldn't recommend using an image like that across multiple platforms (intel, via, sis, etc).... you are much better off creating the ultimate unattended install, and using that to actually install each computer easily...

you might want to try to make the ghost image of the machine right after it reboots when its done copying the files to the hard drive at this point I think its not instaled any drivers yet . this way you could still have your mb and prephil drivers in the $oem\drivers dir

also VMware has a program called p2v that clones a machine into a vmachine and emulates all the hardware on it you might want to look at that as well

oh forgot one thin on win 98 there were a couple of reg keys to uninstall all the drivers you might want to look around to see if you cna do the same thing to xp and /or might want to uninstall all the drivers then shut the machine down and ghost it tha tway when it boots up it will look for its drivers not sure how reliable it would be though

Look for Sysprep.

XP Does not like being cloned before being sysprepped. It'll work fine as long as it will be restored on the same computer, with the same hardware configuration.

it is much better to use a installation cd rather then a ghost less you are using identical hardware.
