A question about Previous Versions

Recommended Posts

Why does Win 7 require Server service, Workstation service, AND TCP/IP NetBIOS service to have previous versions work? Server and Workstation have that stupid SMB protocol and TCP/IP NetBIOS is pointless for the average home user. Please help me understand. Thanks

Hmmm, I don't understand, which "previous versions? :dubbio:

You can disable Samba and NetBios ove TCP/IP just fine:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/2696547/how-to-detect-enable-and-disable-smbv1-smbv2-and-smbv3-in-windows-and

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143696(v=sql.90).aspx

NetBios is *needed* only if you have NT or 9x/Me machines on the network:

https://www.petri.com/disable_netbios_in_w2k_xp_2003

AFAIK/AFAICR it was common to disable it since Windows 2000 in enterprise setups.

You know the Previous Version in the file properties, right?  So you can restore say a folder instead of doing a full system restore from a restore point.  Well, when I have those 3 services stopped and disabled the previous versions window shows no previous versions available.  But when I re enable them they show again.  My question is WHY is that function tied to those 3 services that as far as I can see have nothing to do with making system restores.  This https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Copy  Why does That require 3 seemingly unrelated services to be running to work?

Ahh, you are talking of Shadow Copies.

Workstation and Server are services, while Samba and NetBios over TCP/IP are actually protocols.

Most probably the services are needed, the protocols may not.
