submix8c
@pulteny - Instruction Manual? "I don' have no steenking instruction manual."Remember? CD Backup Copies. *ONLY*! And now we know what you chose. Now, the USB "problem". I *still* don't get it.http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/172397-win9x-locks-up/#entry1084879I would *assume* the Gateway in question has Bult-In USB1.1 ports? These *should* be supported. AFAIK, only non-Intel (e.g. Via Chip) would need additional drivers. Now, if the uSP3 doesn't "cure" your USB problem, you'v obviously got something else wrong. Also forget Belarc. Try this so we can see *exactly* what Physical Devices you have. *SOMETHING* is amiss. http://filehippo.com/download_everest_home/Install it, Run it, HiLite "Devices" (on left pane), go to top and select "Report->Quick Report->Plain Text", "Save To File" it somewhere (default is the Everest Install Folder\REPORT folder), then Upload/Attach it (NOT Copy/Paste, please) here so we can see what the heck is going on!!!! submix8c
You *really* should install the Intel INF (Chipset) Drivers. I'm betting therein lies the problem. From your Report:Mother board- Intel Mount Prospect MP440BXChipset--North Bridge: Intel 82443BX-South Bridge: Intel 82371EB PIIX4EUSB - Intel 82371AB/EB PIIX4 - USB Host ControllerHere's your Wiki reference-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_II.2FIII_chipsetsTry this one -https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/4241/INF-Update-Utility-Primarily-for-Intel-400-Series-ChipsetsThis is the Main Download link (for all Chipsets) -https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/1145/Intel-Chipset-Software-Installation-UtilityNote - maybe the 800 Series? Be ware it says *PRIMARILY* for. Aaaand Hope this helps... Edited November 10, 2015 by submix8c

I then installed the win9x drivers for cruser micro shut down and restarted computer. opened win explorer and it was not shown in my computer. submix8c. Know next to nothing about chipset. PROBLEMCHYLD
I then installed the win9x drivers for cruser micro shut down and restarted computer. opened win explorer and it was not shown in my computer. You are NOT suppose to do that. After you install SP3, you will have to choose betweenMaximus-Decim Native USB Drivers NUSB 3.6 or USBSTACK from SP3. The difference between the 2 packs, SP3 uses updated files from Windows 2000/XP and adds XBOX 360 drivers. Other than that, they both work so choose your posion with discretion. Follow the instructions and all will be fine. As you can see, all my USB drivers are working. Edited November 15, 2015 by PROBLEMCHYLD
submix8c
Aaaand...Have looked in devise manager and all the north bridge and south bridge chipsets report working normal. But does it show the USB Device further down? The INF Update has (specifically) a USB INF inside it for the "PIIX4" (yours). "USB Controller/Hub/(etc.). What you gave (Report) was for the PHYSICAL device (Everest found it). If you look in the Execution under "Windows Devices" you *should* see it. If you don't, the DRIVER IS NOT INSTALLED or IMPROPERLY INSTALLED or FLAT WRONG ONE! As for the post by PROBLEMCHYLD, absolutely correct! WTH are you using the Stick's "driver" for(*never* heard of one being supplied with a USB Stick)? As per his post, THOSE will be the last/latest-greatest Drivers. NOTE that an INF is what *INSTALLS* a Driver. If it isn't "Something.inf" in a Package, it's more than likely a "DriverFile.xxx". You're misunderstanding Drivers and the method of Install. ALSO do *not* Mix-And-Match Unofficial ones (as specified above). Just... DO IT (what CHYLD said). pulteny
the attached files were written in word97 I can open them with word 2003,this is what I have on the old girl. Hi I installed only the first on the list, is this the"core"? I did screen shots from devise manager as did problemchyld I bought the USB stick thinking it was plug and play not so,went to Sandisk tec help and they gave a link to download stuff for Win98se, still the computer would not see it.I found out that a app on the stick U3 had to be disabled, did this on WinXP computer and all was good until I wiped the hard drive An aside,Before go-back windows problem I took the memory and small hard drive from an old Gateway computer and installed it in mine, set up the IDE jumper pins to slave. When it was at the doctors he said it was set up wrongly. I never looked to see what he had done.can't see any conflict between IDE/USB. Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers NUSB 3.6 or USBSTACK from SP3. where is this the on sp3 list, see my screen shotIntel 82371AB.docWindows 98 Second Edition S P 3.49.docUSB Root Hub.doc
submix8c
Kind of looks like the (at least a couple of) SP3 USB Drivers are already there? It *appears* that they're installed with Option#1?I don't see "USBSTACK" actually executed. It "seems" to be an "expanded" version of NUSB? Edit - You have (AFAICT) USB1.1, whereas he has USB1.1 also USB2.0.You - Intel 82371 (older chipset)Him - Intel 82801 (newer chipset) + an NEC AddIn Card(?) Edit2 - I found out that a app on the stick U3 had to be disabled, did this on WinXP computer and all was good until I wiped the hard driveDid you, by chance, FORMAT it in XP? Edit3 - OUCH! A "Sandisk Cruzer U3". A Micro? It would help if we knew the *exact* model. Seams those and Win98 don't play well. I *assume* you "cleaned" it and did *not* format it under XP? This tells the ugly story (witsh specific instrustions) and ha a link *back* to here for NUSB, so...http://www.techimo.com/forum/pc-hardware/176694-sandisk-micro-cruzer-usb-not-recognized-win98.htmlMight I suggest purchasing something other than a U3? Also, here's a link (within this link) by jaclaz that tells another horrific story.http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174777-usb-experiment-with-rtm-xp/#entry1111929 Edited November 18, 2015 by submix8c
PROBLEMCHYLD
For starters, you need to read the HELP file After that, you need to follow the instructions. It seems your board only supports USB1.1.Sandisk Cruzer U3 is USB 2.0 and you don't have that support. You need to get a addon card like I did and maybe you'll have a shot. Until then, you can enjoy other options in SP3. BTW, you should be using 3.50 instead of 3.49.
submix8c
Yeah... bear in mind he *moved* the (original) HDD to a different ("current") MoBo (from "another") and "reinstalled" using the Gateway Recovery to install on the "current" MoBo. The OP's clarity is lacking, apparently due to non-technical understanding. U3 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3Launchpad Removal - https://builtvisible.com/how-to-remove-the-sandisk-u3-launchpad/"Generic" complaints about it - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/243608-32-remove-smart-software-sandisk-flash-driveGoogle - Sandisk U3...and you get all kinds of "WTF???" hits.GOOD GOD! Look at the price for a lousy 4gb from Amazon!http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Micro-Flash-SDCZ6-4096-E11/dp/B000EWHEM6I bought a 4gb Sandisk Cruzer (non-U3) at HomeDepot for $10 and an 8gb Kingston at KROGER for $9.U3, IMHO are pure nightmares and not worth it. And a USB2-speed (NORMAL) stick should run at USB1.1-speed in a USB1.1 slot. Edited November 18, 2015 by submix8c
