ZortMcGort11 Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 I was removing some drives today, and one of them had a black rubber "case" of some kind. Anyway, I couldn't squeeze the thing back into the slot, so I just cut it off. Will this affect the hard drive in some bad way? I mean, it still works. So, what's the use for them. Never seen one before. It was some old 40 Gig hard drive.
Kelsenellenelvian Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Vibration protection and noise reducer. Never really did any good, you don't need it.
ZortMcGort11 Posted March 15, 2014 Author Posted March 15, 2014 Alright, thanks. I won't worry about it now :-)
Andromeda43 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) Sounds like you ran afoul of an old Seagate drive. I never did like all that rubber myself, but I never removed it from any drive either. They didn't do that for very long. It soon dissappeared. You've really got an oldie there! It's amazing how many of those old drives are still running. I recently found a really old, 4 gig drive. And yes, it's still running, although not much use anymore. Besides being very small, it's slower than molasses too. lolGood topic!B) Edited March 29, 2014 by Andromeda43
vladv Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 That "case" was used for noise reduction and vibration protection.
lost_packet Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) That "case" was used for noise reduction and vibration protection....and to keep the drive toasty warm all the time, not only when there's hard frost in the room. Edited April 24, 2014 by lost_packet
Kelsenellenelvian Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 That "case" was used for noise reduction and vibration protection.Yes thank you, that was answered in the second post....
