Open source Presto Engine

well look onto it like with Windows OS

95, 98, ME (yes I am listing DOS based ones on purpose)

they all went out of support not being invested in and abandoned FOREVER

but you still won't get open source of them ever :)

they bear no value to owner (MS), just like Presto to Opera,

but they got their money from it (sponsors), and they don't want NOW anyone to have benefit of it for free

lets take you invent new type of engine for cars and you earn money of it

10 years later it becomes useless and you abandon it, and now approaches you people who want to use it

for their own product/car

would you give it for free ?

won't happen

1. Presto is being used in certain software

2. Presto was never free, thus no reason to become opensource

3. Chairman & Board of Opera won't allow it

Here's a list of things that were said to never happen http://www.rense.com/general81/dw.htm . An attitude like that wont help trying to get them to allow it  . Its persistence that wins out in the end.

Its persistence that wins out in the end.

only if you have something to bargain with

which nobody has

Random people: "release Presto as Open Source !"

Opera: "why should we ?"

its that simple

...

what ?, will everyone mutiny against new chromed opera ?

I already see quite many people switching from chrome to new opera even if its incomplete garbage

I will use Opera 11.52 as long as I can, but I use Pale Moon parallel to Opera

unfortunately at the end it will come to just 2 engines fight for web

Mozilla and Webkit

Trident I doubt it will ever gain power as it gets updated once in 3 years

Quote from petition.

When Opera announced the intention to follow Google to Webkit, and later, to Blink Engine, many people cried in social media about how we where closing to an IE-like time where standards are adopted only when the engine maker decided to support it, where the engine's bugs and flaws became de-facto standards and no one could do nothing to change it.

The only safe route to allow the web to remain free and grant new developers a chance to re-imagine the browser, allow Opera Software to focus on the experience, and keep the engine field open, is to allow everyone access to Presto, maybe allowing only non-commercial usage, and charging a fee to commercial usage.

I underlined the reasons why we the people want it open sourced. (In other words we want it for an open web)

and again, from Opera ASA view "who gives a **** what they want"

as nobody has right to demand it from them

Then they lose market share, and trust. Look at what happened to windows when they took the start menu away.

actually by switching to chrome they will increase it

which was one of things that made them switch :)

Alright that I want to see can you kindly pm me when that happens. Personally if it will or not gain users the new opera isnt opera but just another google chrome clone.
