Soukyuu Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 So I "upgraded" my pc functioning as a home server to win8.1 and now I see they only give you an option of "disconnect" and "sign out" in the shutdown menu. Is there a way to have shutdown/restart in there as well?
NoelC Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 That's been true a long time with Windows. I remember as far back as Win 2000 or XP removing the shutdown entries when remoted-in. Back then one used to be able to invoke it via a menu in Task Manager. You can use the SHUTDOWN command line command (e.g., SHUTDOWN /R /T 10 to restart in 10 seconds).I get that capability back in the start menu now via ClassicShell. There's a specific configuration option in ClassicShell to enable it.-Noel
MagicAndre1981 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I use ProcessHacker (http://processhacker.sourceforge.net/) to remotely hibernate/shutdown PCs when I'm connected via RemoteDesktop.
jaclaz Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Under XP, enabling the thingy was possible even without Classic Shell:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303070/en-usDoes the Ctrl+Alt+End key work not anymore?http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2006/10/20/849575.aspxI suspect that one way or the other, a Registry key is involved (or can be used as a workaround) for the missing feature, though I have NOT at all clear the "way of working", see:http://www.planet-europe.fr/docs/support/Performances-Serveur/Most%20Important%20Registry%20Keys%20for%20Terminal%20Services.pdfIf an application or a script is to be run when a user logs off, the following key is used:• HKLM \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Winlogon \LogoffApp: Listsapplications and scripts, separated by commas.• HKLM \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Shutdown \LogoffSetting:Controls what action the system should take when the Log Off command is used (0 - Log off;1 - Shutdown; 2 - Shutdown and Restart; 3 - Shutdown and Power off)• HKLM \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Shutdown \ShutdownSetting:Controls what action the system should take when the Shutdown command is used (0 - Logoff; 1 - Shutdown; 2 - Shutdown and Restart; 3 - Shutdown and Power off) Somehow OT, but still related, this thingy here seems like nice:http://www.donkz.nl/jaclaz
Soukyuu Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 Thanks for the suggestions. For now I think I will just press alt+F4 when the desktop is focused. I also thought about using a win+x menu customizer to add respective entries, but I know of none which is capable to remove the default entries, to get rid off the redundant "shutdown or sign out >" menu. ClassicShell could work as well, but I'm currently not happy with it's active corner hiding implementation, so I more or less refuse to use it Ctrl+Alt+End does work, but when you click on the "Shutdown" symbol, you are presented with a menu... with the only entry in that menu being "disconnect".
