Win8.1: enable Shutdown/Restart over RDP?

So I "upgraded" my pc functioning as a home server to win8.1 and now I see they only give you an option of "disconnect" and "sign out" in the shutdown menu. Is there a way to have shutdown/restart in there as well?

That's been true a long time with Windows. I remember as far back as Win 2000 or XP removing the shutdown entries when remoted-in. Back then one used to be able to invoke it via a menu in Task Manager.

You can use the SHUTDOWN command line command (e.g., SHUTDOWN /R /T 10 to restart in 10 seconds).

I get that capability back in the start menu now via ClassicShell. There's a specific configuration option in ClassicShell to enable it.

Under XP, enabling the thingy was possible even without Classic Shell:

Does the Ctrl+Alt+End key work not anymore?

I suspect that one way or the other, a Registry key is involved (or can be used as a workaround) for the missing feature, though I have NOT at all clear the "way of working", see:

http://www.planet-europe.fr/docs/support/Performances-Serveur/Most%20Important%20Registry%20Keys%20for%20Terminal%20Services.pdf

If an application or a script is to be run when a user logs off, the following key is used:
• HKLM \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Winlogon \LogoffApp: Lists
applications and scripts, separated by commas.
• HKLM \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Shutdown \LogoffSetting:
Controls what action the system should take when the Log Off command is used (0 - Log off;
1 - Shutdown; 2 - Shutdown and Restart; 3 - Shutdown and Power off)
• HKLM \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Shutdown \ShutdownSetting:
Controls what action the system should take when the Shutdown command is used (0 - Log
off; 1 - Shutdown; 2 - Shutdown and Restart; 3 - Shutdown and Power off)

Somehow OT, but still related, this thingy here seems like nice:

Thanks for the suggestions. For now I think I will just press alt+F4 when the desktop is focused.

I also thought about using a win+x menu customizer to add respective entries, but I know of none which is capable to remove the default entries, to get rid off the redundant "shutdown or sign out >" menu.

ClassicShell could work as well, but I'm currently not happy with it's active corner hiding implementation, so I more or less refuse to use it :P

Ctrl+Alt+End does work, but when you click on the "Shutdown" symbol, you are presented with a menu... with the only entry in that menu being "disconnect".

Yep :), what I wonder is if *somewhere* (not necessarily in the keys I posted) there is a "simple answer" through the Registry to add the feature.

Ctrl+Alt+End used to work only if Fast User switching was disabled.
