piaqt Posted June 2, 2002 Posted June 2, 2002 I need a good, non-scary, non-technical overview of basic common-sense secure internet practice. This is for my mom, the PC preemie, and all-around technophobe. The only one comes to mind is Steve Gibson (grc.com) but I think that might be a little much right now.
FthrJACK Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 steve is a clever bloke, but how do i put this... hmm i cant but i would take some of what he says with a pinch of salt.security... dont give out your address (oops)dont give out your full real name (oops)dont give out your social security number (phew)dont arrange to meet strange men from chat rooms (oop... err i mean phew)comon sense.get an anti virus program + firewalldont give out credit card details in chat boxes or to dodgy looking sites, make sure when ordering online that the page is secure (look for the padlock on your browser)etc etc etccome on pia you can explain this stuff to her im sure
piaqt Posted June 3, 2002 Author Posted June 3, 2002 come on pia you can explain this stuff to her im sure Yes i can, but she keeps asking the SAME questions over & again, & I'm TIRED!If there were a tutorial, she could keep it on file and reference it herself (instead of calling me every 5 secs.)Your suggestions are good, and I'll probably have to write the **** thing myself. Oh, well. I'm learning how to teach, Mom's learning to use a PC, and I can probably get a meal or two out of the deal. Plus, it gives us something to talk about. (monumentally overdramatic sigh)
LS_Dragons Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 I have recommended this site / newsletter many times. Fred does a very good job of explaining lots a techno-weenie stuff in a non-tech way. The basic newsletter is free, as is searching the site. I bet you will find something you can save - or print - for Mommy Dearest......www.langa.comGood hunting.......LS

piaqt Posted June 10, 2002 Author Posted June 10, 2002 Once again, Thank You Very Much. I don't suppose you could find me some cyber aspirin? Last week, mom called to ask how to go offline without shutting down, so I'm tech support. btw Tris, et al: we need a smilie for "oh my splitting head."
