hag672 Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Hi:I am running xp pro (32-bit) I have had problems with windows properly shutting down..It just seems to hang with the "Windows is shutting down" message.I created a shortcut to shutdown windows which includes the following parameters:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\KILLAPPS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.SHUTDOWN.EXE -r -f -t 2I also manually closed all programs that had processes in the system tray.Is there a program or utility that will kill all active processes, and then use the shutdown.exe parameters as above so windows xp will shutdown normally?Much Thanks
submix8c Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Don't know if this will help - find Microsoft's UPHCLEAN "User Profile Hive Cleanup".Killing "shutdown" isn't too wise - that's what shuts you down. "..problems with windows shutting down"/hangs indicates that something is not being "stopped". Try the above "fix" to see if it helps at all.
xpclient Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Yes always install User Profile Hive Cleanup service 1.6 on XP: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6676 or 2.0 beta from http://blogs.technet.com/b/uphclean/archive/2008/10/31/new-uphclean-beta-build.aspx . It is highly likely your user profile isn't getting cleanly unloaded.
sbglobal2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Windows XP shutdown problems can actually be attributed to many reasons. These problems are often categorised into legacy hardware and software compatibility issues.
Ascii2 Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Is there a program or utility that will kill all active processes, and then use the shutdown.exe parameters as above so windows xp will shutdown normally? No; if a program or utility kills itself after killing all active processes, it cannot then invoke the SHUTDOWN.EXE utility.
