Hi

For the first time here, want to salute all of you !

sorry for my english...

about my problem: I install several times Win98SE on my Compaq Presario 1800,the only OS that have success ( WinME or xp give me blue screen)

after a reinstall win98SE I see that my DVD not read anything, when put a cd and open not seen any files.also the drive D change into Cd(D).

I was thinking to reinstall so delete the partition, making new one, format the partition and then when I want to install it not read the cd giving the error: cdr103 cdrom not high sierra or iso-9660 format

I used other CD-ROM, the same situation...

my laptop can play audio cd without starting windows and the DVD-ROM function in that way.

I boot from the win98 startup disk ,try to install but give me the error.

can you help me somehow?

thanks

You can try downloading an image and rebuilding a new floppy from bootdisk.com. If it still doesn't work and your cdrom media is prerfectly redable, then as it seems, the reader or its connection to the motherboard is defective.

Can you boot from any bootable CD ?

10 years is quite ok for an optical drive to die. :blushing:

You could still try reinstalling from USB, booting USB via "Plop Boot Manager" on floppy.

Let's hope this is a language barrier problem.

Please clarify

1. Drive works perfect in another computer.

2. Problem CD works in another computer

3. No CD can boot.

If no CD can boot, but CD works in other computer. Do you have a CD Cleaner?

What the OP said was:

my laptop can play audio cd without starting windows and the DVD-ROM function in that way.

So if I understand, the built in functions to play CD/DVD without the OS running still seems to work, but using the drive to read/install anything fails. He then said:

As I say , the optical drive works perfect on other laptop.

which I interpret to mean that he took the drive out and put it in another laptop and it worked perfectly normally. All this seems very weird if it is true. It definitely needs some clarification.

Cheers and Regards

Afimative answers to all 3 questions!

Another thing is that when I try to boot from CD,not hear any circulal movement, and when I boot from the floppy ,I can see the drive, the driver but can;t be read ,give me the error cdr103 cdrom not high sierra or iso-9660 format
