spystyle Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) Hello from Maine I like XP SP3 I make it skinny with Nlite then pump it up with driverpacks. But XP has a 4 GB ram limit, so I've been tinkering with Windows 2003 Enterprise which can use a whopping 64 GB of RAM, apparently. So far I have it Nlite'd and tweaked to resemble Windows XP, but when I go to shut it down there is a big procedure I don't like. Can I slipstream a faster shutdown routine into Win 2003 using Nlite ? Or modify it somehow ? Thanks!Craig Edited February 22, 2011 by spystyle
spystyle Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 oops can someone move this to the Nlite forum (doh!)
Guest Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 You mean the shutdown tracker? I believe there is a group policy setting to turn that off.
allen2 Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 You won't be able to use memory over 4GB even on a 2003 enterprise unless you use applications that are able to work in this case and most end user applications don't.
spystyle Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 So for example, MAME32 and QUAKE 3 ARENA couldn't enjoy 32 GB of RAM in Windows Enterprise 2003 ? Am I forced to go with Windows Vista and Windows 7 ? I miss the XP style windows explorer
allen2 Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Most X86 app aren't able to address more than 4GB (2^32) of memory (like the system) and by default the system won't allow any process to use more than 2GB of memory. Only X64 applications running on an X64 os can use correctly memory over 4GB. The few exceptions are servers applications like MS SQL server....

spystyle Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 By the way, is there anyway to use XP explorer in Vista and Win7 ?
Guest Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) No but you can use Explorer++. If you set some options it looks almost exactly like XP's explorer. Edited February 23, 2011 by -X-
