Windows 7 partition space requirement

Recommended Posts

I am planning to install Windows 7, 64 bit on a 1TB HDD in one of two partitions. I have read space allowance recommendations for from 20 GB to 50 GBs. I understand that along with the OS, there are several additional files that have to be installed in that same partition, ie. Program Files, Program Files (x86), Users and Perflogs. If this is correct, wouldn't it be prudent to allow more space than that? If that is not correct, how do I force these files to go to the other partition during installation.

My install of Win7 64-bit on a 250Gb partition takes up 25Gb of space - includes Office Home and Student 2010 plus a number of other programs.

But is it correct that those files:Program Files, Program Files (x86), Users and Perflogs have to be installed in the same partition as the OS?

My 32bit W7 only takes up 7.3 gigs on a 10 gig partition. I don't install programs to OS drives though.

Yes I appreciate the help, but I still don't know what specific files have to be installed in the OS partition. What files do you have?

I replaced the HDD in my present rig with a WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA II ( I want two partitions, 1 for OS and the other for data), and a WD VelociRaptor 150 GB HDD SATA II (for Flight Simulation).

So - here is what I want: A new clean install. In my WD 1TB HDD I want two partitions. I want to install in the first partition the OS and only the necessary files in order to allow me to reinstall or upgrade with out disturbing the data files. In the second partition I want all of the data files. In the WD VRap, which is still empty, I want to install just my MS Flight Simulator. I appreciate any help that you can give especially the guidance on the files that I need to install with the OS.

Intel e6600 Core 2 Duo @4.00GHz

Noctua NH-U12P Cooler

ASUS P5Q Pro

EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB Clock 660 MHz

WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA II

WD VelociRaptor 150 GB HDD SATA II

Corsair CMPSU 550W

You only need to install into the C drive the Microsoft Windows 7 OS files and very few things more. Most apps offer you the possibility of installing them into any other drive unit. You are able to create as many logical units as you wish for them and also for your personal files and folders.

This way your personal files will never be affected by any failure of the OS, being also faster the recovery of the C drive when needed.

Thanks guys for the good info. Since I have 931 GBs available, I will partition to two and dedicate a couple of hundred GBs for any contingencies. Ted
