Boot sequence editing remotely

Featured Replies

Hi,

Here is what I wanted to do:

1. Setup WOL (Wake On Lan) and let the device to boot through PXE.

I have done a setup for WOL and PXE also. But the struggling part for me is, "Editing the boot order" after waking up the device(using WOL). I want the device to boot through PXE only once (each time when woke up from WOL).

Can any one help me on this?

Thanks,

Dinesh Bhat

I guess you'll need some special kind of BIOS for that or

a NIC with a custom written boot-PROM...

Don't know if these exist

A possibility is to access the BIOS (SMBIOS) settings and change them programmatically:

http://linux.dell.com/libsmbios/main/index.html

http://www.dmtf.org/standards/smbios

Some vendors provide CMOS Tokens:

http://linux.dell.com/libsmbios/main/security.html#what_cmos

Or maybe mod this:

http://rayer.ic.cz/romos/romose.htm

BUT it's a loooong way, as I see it.

Maybe you should ask for help in forums dedidacated to BIOS and BIOS modding....
