bizzybody Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Is there a program that can copy the Win98SE DOS system files to a hard drive from XP? Would be nice and easy to be able to hook up a drive as slave, format it FAT32 then SYS it with the 98SE files, then copy the 98 install files, drivers etc. to the drive. All it'd really need to do is ensure IO.SYS is in the right place since with 9x MSDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM don't have to be located in specific sectors. Then I could just plug it into its final resting PC place and install - just like I used to do in ye olden dayes when my main OS was 98SE. I don't work on old Windows versions enough to justify having a box running it full time or even dual booting it.
e-t-c Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) Hi,Install not from the 98SE CD is not possilble? You can create a FAT32 Partition with FDISK (or similair). And make under XP a MS-DOS Floppy Boot Diskette and copy the Data in the Partition (if necessary?).cheersEDIT: Maybe useful ... http://www.ptdd.com/createpartition.htmSuper Fdisk (EASEUS) http://www.ptdd.com/manual2.htmSuper Fdisk is the free DOS Partition Manager. Ponch Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Then I could just plug it into its final resting PC place and installIf that supposed older PC has a floppy drive like most used to have, that should be a piece of cake. But to answer what I understand is your question, no, there is no way to create a bootable Win98 from a running XP.
e-t-c Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 There is a Tool around, named BOOTICE you can create a FAT Windows 98 Partition Record under/within XP. BTW: Will need a free Account at Bootland to download this small Tool. http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...mode=linearplus
jaclaz Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 You can use bootpart allright:http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htmAnd or MBRFIX:http://www.sysint.no/nedlasting/mbrfix.htmnewer versions have a "fixbootsector" switch that allows changing the bootsector code. Please note that FAT32 has a "spare" bootsector on sector 6, it would be advisable to check it and re-write it with a copy of the first sector, in order to have a fully "kosher" FAT32 "DOS" filesystem. For the record DOS 6.22 had the requisite that IO.SYS MUST be first file in partition FAT, DOS 7.x/8.0 DOES NOT have anymore this need. However copying files in this order:IO.SYSMSDOS.SYSCOMMAND.COMis a good ol' rule of thumb that always worked.Lots of info can be found "between the lines" of this thread:http://www.msfn.org/board/create-easily-se...23.html&hl=jaclaz

You can use XP as main OS, of course, using a reduced Windows 98 only for maintenance operations. It allows you to make active a cloned copy of any of both OS using another partition of the same HD or another HD unit.HTH Edited October 30, 2009 by cannie
