HardDriv'n
I know this might be a stupid question, but does anyone know if it's possible to remap the ctrl-alt-del hotkey to bring up something other than the "close program" dialog in WinME?I prefer using Process Explorer as opposed to the default dialog, but the last version supported on Windows 9X didn't have a "replace the task manager" option. I want keep the familiarity of ctrl-alt-del for the basic task manager functions, but with Process Explorer. HardDriv'n
Okay.....Does anyone know how Windows captures the hotkey strokes to bring up the pseudo task manager "close program" dialog? Is there any way to intercept it?On a second note is there a file that is responsible for the dialog, or is there a way to edit my registry to bring up Process Explorer instead of the dialog? osRe
I suppose you could modify it by editing a Windows DLL or two, but isn't that an extreme measure even if you knew which file it was and how to patch it? (E.g., there could be cases where Windows can't launch a new software but could show the standard dialog.) Why not assign a normal hotkey and get used to it? lightning slinger
Why not assign a normal hotkey and get used to it?IMHOBetter idea altogether. It takes more resources to open Process Explorer than it does Task Manager. If your PC is just on the point of locking up or freezing then opening Process Explorer may just be the final straw and ending up with total lock-up.Better to still have the option of opening Task Manager. (Close program.)Edit; I can remember this question cropping up on another forum four or five years ago, possibly more, but despite searching today I have been unable to locate it again, and, so far as I can remember, the consensus of opinion was then, that it was not possible to remap Ctrl+Alt+Del on 9X. Mijzelf
AFAIK the 'Close program' windows is no 'real' window, and no normal program. When it's shown the whole gui is locked (have an animation shown, it stops while the 'Close program' window is there). I *think* it runs in kernelmode, and then it will be very difficult to exchange it.

herbalist
I prefer using Process Explorer as opposed to the default dialog, but the last version supported on Windows 9X didn't have a "replace the task manager" option. That option is present on the older 9X compatible versions, but is visible only when it's running on an NT system. When running on 98, the "replace task manager" menu entry isn't there.Rick
