There is no final answer.

Use a file system supported by your hardware, by the BIOS.

Some BIOS dosn't boot from NTFS.

Try NTFS, FAT32, or even FAT16.

in this guide:

http://www.msfn.org/board/install-xp-usb-t111406.html

i need to format the usb but they dont say which filesystem an 8gb usb needs to be formated to..

then which one? fat32 or ntfs?

thanks in advanced

In Section 3 of your reference I read:

Format the USB-Drive with FAT or NTFS. Note: FAT32 is very SLOW for installing XP

This means you certainly need to Format with NTFS for Install of XP from USB,

otherwise FileCopy in TXT-mode XP Setup will take an hour or so ....
