HoppaLong Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Who would want their external drives to slow down. Me, that'swho!Besides apps like BurstCopy that attempt to maximize datatransfer speed, are there any apps that can set the speed, usually in Mbps, to any number you want?XP and eSATA drives are like oil and water. They don't mix!You can tweak the hell out of the system, it doesn't matter.XP was developed before these super fast drives. Vista fixedthe problem by using dynamic virtual memory management. If you want to read about how XP uses static paged pool andpaged table entries (PTEs) just Google the topic. CompareXP to Vista in this area and you'll begin to understand theproblem. Please, no more tweaks or registry hacks. If there is anapp that allows you to set the data transfer speed, directme to the link or site.Thank guys.
jcarle Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Short of writing your own file system filter driver, I don't believe what you want exists... (at least, I couldn't find anything like this).
HoppaLong Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 That name, TotalCommander, sounded familiar.Back in the days of 95 and 98 there were freeware sites that specializedin shell replacements or overlays. The overlay left Windows alone, butgave you the option of using a different shell.Several of these shell replacements got great reviews in the computer mags.I never could convince myself to try one.I was reading the TotalCommander features and their endless list of FAQs.I don't see anything about controlling data transfer speed. Maybe they callit something else. Can you show me where in ghisler.com this topic is mentioned?
nitroshift Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 When you select the file(s) to be copied, press F5 then F2 and in the new window at the bottom you can set the transfer speed in kb/s. Hope this helps
