I installed xp via winsetupfromusb

Everything was fine the first attempt.

I messed up some setting went to reinstall it and XP ended up on D: drive and I cannot boot without selecting 2nd part of setup while booting from the thumb drive.

I seen the faq, does that mean I should just reinstall it making sure hdd is 1st boot device (might have changed this for 2nd install) or can I fix it without reinstall. (it does take an awful long time to install)

Thank for the help.

NO, if you are OK with XP on D:\ all you need to do is to check you have NTLDR + NTDETECT.COM + BOOT.INI on the Active partition and edit your BOOT.INI to reflect where XP is.

The DX21 GUI app can still be found through the Wayback Machine:

If you don't want it on D:\ you will need to reinstall.
