so i have a relatively old pc running 1gb ram, 3.2ghz prescott intel, 1.4 tb of storage, and Windows Server 2008

basically, i want to acess my files on the server from anywhere with an internet connection, using a web browser. in a prefect world, id like to type in https://www.breadandbubbles.com. it asks me for a password, i give it, and a folder tree appears representing all the files on the my server, available for me to transfer to my current laptop a thousand miles away. a fancy GUI would be nice. but a simple folder tree would be wonderful in itself.

is ftp my answer?

thing is, i know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about networking.

im not looking for a hand-out here. no step by steps. that would be great, but ideally im just looking for some leads from you guys. anyone know of any tips? any well written howtos? websites that can help? anyone who can get my started?

id REALLY appreciate it. i just cant seem to google my way out of this one.

oh! and i was hoping to set up a website one day. im not sure if that matters.

update: I just created a free account at dyndns.com, hoping for some insight there. found some great guides on VNC, which i hadnt considered but am now very excited about. otherwise, still baffled

side question though: VNC, and online servers, etc. do they create strong security risks? i know theres always SOME risk with the internet, but should i be concerned? even if i dont give out my domain to anyone?
