lordsepid Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 hiI had this problem a few times and each time i reinstalled windows because i couldn't fix it.I created an unattended windows XP-SP3 DVD + all the hotfixes + dotnetfx 3.5 + microsoft office 2007 + many other softwares that are installed through the windows setup automatically.as you can see in the picture that i attached to this post, sometimes, after installation, the first time that windows starts, the "explorer.exe" crashes and reloads again and then my desktop changes to this. It is the "desktop folder" that is stuck on my desktop. there is no background image and no icons.I really need to know how can i fix it ? is there any registry key that can help ?thanks
Kelsenellenelvian Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I think you push F11 to make the border re-appear...
lordsepid Posted September 11, 2008 Author Posted September 11, 2008 I think you push F11 to make the border re-appear...this is not a my computer window. it cannot be closed even through the task manager. it is stuck to the desktop and there's no way to close it unless you end the process "explorer.exe".I think something has changed somewhere in the registry that caused this. maybe a bug in a hotfix or something like that !can anybody help me through this ?
lordsepid Posted September 11, 2008 Author Posted September 11, 2008 At least tell me where can i ask this question !
neowillendit Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Hey lordsepid,I'm not an expert, so I've waited til now to post this, because no one else has posted anything...but it could be VERY likely that your nLite XP Install could have been corrupted. It's even more likely that the order in which software installs through your personalized nLite XP install could corrupt one another as it's being set up.You say that you have all these programs setup through nLite to install automatically, but in the past in my experiences with nLite have been all bad with corrupt installs, missings random windows components that I didn't select to remove, and just crazy things happening in windows after the install. After all the headaches, I decided to never use that stuff...besides...why do you think there are SO MANY revisions of nLite? It's because of all the fixes they need to make in order to cure all the problems I had in the past!!Just a thought from an advanced computer user, although also from a person who doesn't know if this experience of mine has helped you at all.Take care fellow XP Brother...
lordsepid Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 thanks neowillenditI'm agree with you about nlite but I should mention that i didn't use nlite or any other software for automating windows setup. I created it myself. But it doesn't happen every time i install it, and this makes me confused.anyway i found that it only happens to the current user and if you create another user it doesn't appear !I'm still working on it.
neowillendit Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 OK lordsepid, good luck and let us know if you need anything.
Tripredacus Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I've done this accidently before. It was a long time ago, and I can't remember how I fixed it. It is possible to do without any registry editing, iirc, and I think you have to fool around with ActiveDesktop to make it go away.
spacesurfer Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I was also thinking activedesktop. try disabling active desktop
kingsc Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Wow... you've got a good one there .I've done alot of screwing around with NLite and Driverpacks, never seen that. Of course just about anything can be fixed in the registry, but I'll be darned to tell you even where to look, lol.One thing I know from the guy who created NLite, he said to only use NLite *once* in the process of creating the ISO. Don't use NLite over and over with the same install files, a high chance of corruption can result.I'd say start from scratch, plan it out, and do it all in one shot if you haven't already.
