  1. So I cheated and added a host record to _mcdcs for "de67edef-eceb-4b03-a449-15b7f915044b" The check now passes, but I get the following warning: Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\SRV-1 Starting test: Connectivity *** Warning: could not confirm the identity of this server in the directory versus the names returned by DNS servers. If there are problems accessing this directory server then you may need to check that this server is correctly registered with DNS ......................... SRV-1 passed test Connectivity
  2. Wierd, I don't see the attachment there, anyone see it? I included the image here in case it didn't attach properly.
  3. Awesome response and very informative, thank you! This is the history with our DNS server: The DNS server is also our AD server. I told the guy who was setting it up to not start the AD installation process until the next day because he wasn't going to have time to finish it. Well he did it anyway, and in a rush, after the AD was done installing, the DNS part came up and he cancelled it. So after some work, we had dns problems of course, so he removed the role and re-added it. We tried creating a primary lookup zone for table1.com afterward, but it was already there I guess since that's what the error at the end of the procedure told us. I won't be able to look at it again until Monday(I think) unfortunately, but I'll update as soon as I do and hopefully be able to provide some screenshots! Ok I have no idea what I'm doing here but while I'm trying to work this out, I thought I'd attach a pic of what the DNS structure looks like. ALso, we did verify we can get out to the internet from computers that list only our DNS server for their DNS server.

  5. Ah, hi there cluberti, I don't think I've talked with you since back when I was trying to put together my universal image. What you're saying makes sense to me, and I did check the _mcds tree, but I don't know what I'm doing unfortunately. I have two trees, the _msdcs one and a table1.com one. I'll post screenshots later, but in the table1.com tree, IIRC, there is an A record for both SRV-1 and SRV-2(The computer I'm running DCDiag from, that I'll be installing exchange on). Also, IIRC, the _msdcs tree is empty, which maybe explains why I'm getting that error? But if that's the case, why is it trying to utilize that tree when both SRV-1 and 2 are in the table1.com domain? I'll utilize the hyperlink you gave me and see what I can find. Thanks.
  6. Hi all, new to this topic and trying to setup Exchange 2003 on a Windows Server 2003. The DNS server is a seperate server running Windows Server 2008. Like I said I'm new to this so I'm sure it's something simple related to the DNS server. Can anyone help?
  7. Ok so I tried disabling outlook addins to no effect, recreating the profile a second time, ran SFC, and re-installed office. All to no effect..... and she's the only user this is happening to.....
  8. The problem with those are that they sit in the background eating up resources while they aren't being used, and requires the indexing service to be enabled which is not. Also, that won't alleviate the now somewhat new issue that its' even freezing sporadically when navigating folders. Now, I know that means she has too much stuff. I'm well aware. Problem is she works in accounts payable and she needs ALL of them. On top of that, there is another user in her department that has all the same mailboxes that she does, plus a couple more and no problem....... frustrating. EDIT - Updating everyone and myself.... What I've done: * Rebuilt profile * Checked for google desktop and windows desktop search * Made sure indexing was disabled in services.msc. * Office Diagnostics * Run Contig on OSTs/PSTs What I haven't done: * Re-installed Office * Re-imaged machine * Disable OutlookAddin * Run sfc /scanonce * Anything else I haven't though of.
  9. WRONG. SHe's STILL having the issue!!!
  10. We've had this deployed for months, no problems.
  11. Nevermind.. think I may have fixed it. I have a batch file that runs as a runonce when a new profile is created, I just added two registry keys via REG ADD to modify the EnableAutoDial and GlobalUserOffline values to return them to their normal starting values. Thanks anyways.
  12. Quick problem I'm trying to tackle in an image. I set up a PPTP VPN connection in an image so that we wouldn't have to configure it anymore for users. If I create a local test user, everything works correctly. However, after attaching the computer to the domain, and signing in with any user, when I open IE the Dial a connection window pops up. This is easily fixed afterwards but annoying and the point of the image is to not have to deal with it. I'm doing some testing on my own but has anyone in a business environment experienced a similar issue that can provide some advice?
  13. Figured it out. We actually had 3 users with the problem, and 1 of them was on XP. Pinned it down to a directory service issue on the exchange server. The Sys Admin said everything looked good but restarting the server services resolved it. Thank god!
  14. So I may have a clue...... There's definitely a communication problem here. When clicking the "To:" button, the "cannot contact exchange server" message pops up. If I take the account off cached mode Outlook doesn't connect at all.
  15. Looks like installing WDS and the user archiving old items fixed the issue.
  16. Looks like we have another user now with somewhat similar issues. An interesting thing about both of these users, if you look in Even Viewer it shows several alerts saying Outlook connection to exchange could not be established, or something wierd like that, but you open the Outlook window and it says that it's connected. I'm pretty sure both these users are configured to connect via HTTP since they are both Vista (Non-company standard) machines that haven't been configured for domain access.
  17. Office 2007 Home and Student with Service Pack 1 Outlook 2007 (Appears to have been installed seperately from Office 2007 Home and Student) Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 I am completely baffled. Everything was fine for this user until last week. Not sure if an update was applied or what, but this problem is just STRANGE. Ok, so if he tries to send an email to a user that the computer "knows", i.e. when he starts typing the name in the To: field, it shows the recipient under where he is typing (I believe this is a MRU?), he can send as normal. But if he tries to send to someone he doesn't "know", i.e. someone he's never sent to before, he can click the send button and nothing happens. When I say nothing happens, I mean absolutely nothing; the email doesn't even go to the outbox. -Office Diagnostics: Nothing (Big Surprise) -Renaming extend.dat to extend.bak and recreating (For S&Gs): Nothing -Create new profile using exact same settings (Connect via HTTP): For some reason, this won't work either, says cannot contact exchange server, which is bogus because I've done this a million times before. I'm not sure if this is a separate/additional problem, or it's related. However he can definitely reach the Outlook Web Access server via his browser, so it's not an exchange connectivity issue. Also inside of Outlook it does connect to the Exchange server. -Have not tried a re-install of Office yet. Trying to avoid this. -Outlook in safe mode: Nothing -Disabling all addins: Nothing -Note: Did an uninstall of Norton360 which of course required me to go back and run the Norton Removal Tool because it didn't completely uninstall the firewall; it appears to be removed now. I'm going to hit the Event Viewer and hit the send button and see if anything correlates, and double check what updates have been applied, but has anyone seen anything like this?
  18. I looked at the other user. She has WDS installed. Apparantly she has even more mailboxes attached then the user with the problem. Looks like WDS has an outlook addin that's indexing her email so of course the searches work and are fast. I can't find a better solution so I'm installing WDS and crossing my fingers.
  19. Using Windows XP Pro w/SP3. I already recreated her profile. You think there's some other system files that may be corrupted that will be recreated after deleting it?
  20. Hello All, I have a difficult problem. I have a user who's Outlook 2007 freezes, and produces an OfficeLifeboat hang failure in Event viewer when she performs a search intermittently. She's connected to her own personal mailbox, as well as 2 others, one for expense reports and another for accounts payable. They are all large. I thought she was the only one with this sort of setup, but I recently discovered another user with the same setup and not experiencing the same issue so I'm going to look at hers later today but this is what I have so far. What I've done: * Rebuilt profile * Checked for google desktop and windows desktop search * Made sure indexing was disabled in services.msc. * Office Diagnostics What I haven't done: * Re-installed Office * Re-imaged machine * Anything else I haven't though of. What I can't do: * Delete "unnecessary" email * Tell the user not to use so many subfolders and with long folder names. Has anyone experienced something similar? The Officelifeboathang error leads me nowhere; alot of people have had it, but with different types of symptoms and none relating to a search.
  21. Update.... So I've found another user with the same problem, and I just set up his computer so it's not SP2... It's intermittent when it happens and it happens to random folders.. I'm at a complete loss. (((((
  22. So I've made a batch file to search the entire computer utilizing xcopy and copy these certain types of files to an external HDD. Is there any way to force xcopy to just dump the files I want -without- building the directory structure? I just want pictures in a pictures folder, docs in a doc folder, etc. I don't want to have to sort through WINDOWS\System32\bla.jpg and Local Settings\App Data\Microsoft\<Whatever>\bla2.jpg to figure out what's junk and what's not. Here's the contents of my batch file so far. @echo off ::BANNER echo ============================================================== echo ============== ================== echo ============== ExtractIT v1.0 by ================== echo ============== ================== echo ============================================================== echo. echo. ::CONFIGURATION set extractpoint="f:\EXTRACT" ::PICTURE EXTRACTION echo Performing picture extraction... echo. echo. xcopy /I /S /G /H /Q /Y /C c:\*.jpg %extractpoint% echo. echo. echo JPG files extracted. xcopy /I /S /G /H /Q /Y /C c:\*.jpeg %extractpoint% echo. echo. echo JPEG files extracted. xcopy /I /S /G /H /Q /Y /C c:\*.bmp %extractpoint% echo. echo. echo BMP files extracted. echo. echo. echo Picture extraction complete. echo. echo. echo Performing document extraction... xcopy /I /S /G /H /Q /Y /C c:\*.doc* %extractpoint% echo. echo. echo Word document extraction complete. xcopy /I /S /G /H /Q /Y /C c:\*.xls* %extractpoint% echo. echo. echo Excel spreadsheet extraction complete. xcopy /I /S /G /H /Q /Y /C c:\*.pdf %extractpoint% echo. echo. echo Adobe PDF document extraction complete. echo. echo. echo Document extraction complete. echo. echo. echo Extraction complete, have a nice day! =) echo. echo. ::RESTORE ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION set extractpoint= pause
  23. That's the most important info. What servers are listening on port 34447? The laptop is probably trying to find a printer or something. If the destination port was incrementing, it would likely be a scanner. 34447 is a non standard port so it's probably not malware trying to infect other pcs. Oh yeah I definitely know it's not trying to infect other PCs; I've seen what that looks like in action with the Mario Forever virus *sigh*. So to recap... The source port increments by 1... so this wouldn't be a port scanner right? Wouldn't it be a port scanner if the destination port was incrementing? As for it trying to find a printer... maybe but.... this is what I don't get... *UPDATE* Just had a talk with my system admin and have a much better understanding. So something is trying to contact anything that will speak with it on port 34447. THe wierd names are just related to the port table in wireshark, and since it's incrementing by 1, thats why the name changes; I can label the port numbers whatever I want. I didn't know this; I thought it was something that was being read in the packet. I don't think it's looking for a printer as it's a non-standard port and maybe because it's using UDP broadcasts which is fire-and-forget, but then again I'm not sure what normal activity looks like. We have a print server and I think I would see the destination as the IP address of that print server instead of these broadcasts, but, as said earlier, I'm no networking expert.
  24. Hmmmm, I'll have to get with the Sr. Sys Admin and figure out the best way about getting that done politely lol. I'll update what we find. Honestly, there's been several occasions where Trend Micro OfficeScan doesn't pick up something, I've gotten tired of sending them samples(aka doing their job for them). ---BUT---- It may not even be installed on this laptop; it's his personal(Don't blast me, I already know what a bad idea that is.. ).
