I also got the error. I tried specifying a location in the new HW wizard but the wizard did not recognize the inf. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is there a way I could split the infs so Win98 will recognize them?

Here you go :hello: The version at MDGx site is outdated.

Thanks! I was able to install the driver this time, but I somehow ended up with two controller profiles listed in the device manager: "Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller" and "HID-compliant controller." I tested them on Need for Speed II SE. The game recognized only the HID controller profile and all it could do with it was send force feedback. The buttons and sticks didn't respond. I am not fluent enough in Japanese to understand the readme file, so I probably did something wrong during the installation. Would you mind explaining step-by-step how you installed the driver? For instance, did you allow Windows to copy files from the Windows 98 CD?

Make sure you have the latest Direct X 9.

Make sure you have NUSB installed.

Extract the file USBSTOR.SYS from http://www.mdgx.com/files/USB20DRV.EXE

and place it in Windows\System32\Drivers folder.

Change the usbstor.inf in the Windows\inf directory to read

[uSBSTOR.AddReg]

HKR,,DevLoader,,*NTKERN

HKR,,NTMPDriver,,"wdmstub.sys,USBSTOR.SYS"

;HKR,,NTMPDriver,,USBSTOR.SYS

instead of this

[uSBSTOR.AddReg]

HKR,,DevLoader,,*NTKERN

;HKR,,NTMPDriver,,"wdmstub.sys,USBSTOR.SYS"

HKR,,NTMPDriver,,USBSTOR.SYS

after that, go to safe mode delete all usb controllers. REBOOT

Let all drivers redetect. Install the Xbox controller driver.

Yeah it sucks to have to go through all of this but.............You should be golden afterwards :thumbup

Just wanted to let you know I (dirty) fixed the driver for use with Microsoft XBox 360 original controller in Windows 98 SE.

Based on OP drivers. So THX for that!

- Removed the for WIN98SE "bloated" stuff in the .inf files. .inf files may not be larger than 65.535 Bytes.

- Use X2.inf for installing (remove all other controller related stuff first in device manager)

Only Microsoft original controller will work, I removed the Mad Catz stuff... (If you need another controller in the resp. .inf files let me know)

Regards

Hello marquisor, for some reason, the drivers doesn't seem to install properly. It needs a package installer because when installing from device manager it doesn't load all files.

EDIT:

Found a workaround, It's to copy all needed files to it's respective folder: 360c.sys to Windows/system32/drivers, and the rest to Windows/system.

I saw that driver should be integrated in W98USP3, but for me its still blinking, so its not working, i suppose.

I wonder in which games it could be tested? I dont know any Windows 98 game with X360 controller support from top of my head.. Here was something about Dosbox, make Dosbox in Win9x sense?

It should work for all games if properly installed. You need to install DX9, the USB pack in the SP or NUSB and remove all USB drivers in safe mode and let them re-detect.

Its very highlevel true.. There not too much Windows 98 games with gamepad support and even they are supporting lots of time only old gamepads, without 2 analog stick.  I guess that you also need to use control panel for game controllers and manually map Xbox 360 buttons and axis..

So im asking, if there is game with out of box X360 gamepad support, maybe some emulator still ported for Windows 98? For quick testing..
