hmunster123 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 I need to reinstall xp on my desktop but all I have is a dell reinstallment cd, my computer is HP as I stated above. Can I strip this using Nlite and just use the XP part? Help, I really need my computer back. Thanks, any info is much appreciated.Lori in Brooklyn
Tarun Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Call HP and ask them to send you a restore CD. Tell them you never got one. Seems strange you have a Dell restore CD with an HP notebook.
hmunster123 Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 a friend gave me the disc, can i use it if I strip it? Anyone know?
PC_LOAD_LETTER Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 no if its a dell OEM disc its only licensed for use on dell PCs. if your HP shipped with XP, they are the only ones that can provide you with a cd for that license.
CoffeeFiend Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Do like Tarun said. That Windows won't be activated on your HP tower, it's of no use to you. Just give Dell a call.
hmunster123 Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 I thought maybe I could strip it with Nlite
JedMeister Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 No, no no!Like the others said just ring HP!Even if you do get a disk from HP, it is not advised to touch it with nLite. The OEM supplied 'reinstall' disks are not generally a proper XP disk and have already been played with. It may work, but probably not. Basically it would be the same as nLiting a XP disk that had aready been nLited! Bad plan!
TheFlash428 Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 I thought maybe I could strip it with NliteThis will not work. The Dell CDs are made to only authenticate with Dell computers. If installed on an HP, it will not activate.Trust me, I've already seen friends make this same mistake.I'm not even sure what you're trying to "strip" with nLite...? nLite does not have the capability to modify the aspects of the CD that affect this. You will never see a response on this site claiming what you are trying to do is possible, because by all legal means, it isn't.
