Just started reading on WPI.

So Question:

Is it possible to have WPI search for mirror on internet for programs/packages to install?

If so, much profit, and much love!

I suppose with a combination of wget and the right adresses you COULD do it.

But its not a direction we want to take WPI in.

Ok so to ask question in another way.

Could it be done so that one could install programs from lan?

Now obviously this would be great in several scenarios. I don't quite understand your refusal to not do this, how great this could be.

There's obviously a great potential in this, ie linux distros.

Not that it should be linuxified, but it would be great to have possibility to set up own server mirror, f.ex lan and one could easily retrieve needed programs for install on 20 machines. Or schools. The possibilities are relatively infinite here.

WPI is commonly used from lan. There are several posts and threads on doing this.

I took it to mean "Select adobe reader and have WPI download it from adobe and install it for you", Thats what my refusal todo was.

Mantainging a database like that and keeping it updated would be a nightmare. PLUS WPI is used in 29+ languages right now.

You would be talking THOUSANDS of entries and addresses that would have to be mantained monthly or more.

Ok but can i set it up, so i can make my own server so to retrieve files over internet as in ftp or whatnot?

For *personal* usage, ie not public.

I see your point of a localized site for the latest version of freeware programs, maybe even with the args set for you, it would be nice. The major hangup would be bandwidth. Unless you have a site with free unlimited bandwidth, it wouldn't be cost-effective.

WPI could also only download files after an internet connection has been established on your computer.

It does sound enticing. But neither Kel nor myself has the time, or patience, to maintain the archives. I use WPI at my job on a lan and that is hard enough sometimes. Keeping my CD/DVD up to date is also lagging behind sometimes.

Maybe some day I will try it just to see how well it would work. Maybe......
