ricktendo
Yes, you can!1- Extract the Windows Sidebar folder from install.wim (you can use 7zip to open it)2- Copy it to the "%ProgramFiles%" directory3- Run the following commands from Run boxREGSVR32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\sbdrop.dll"REGSVR32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\wlsrvc.dll""%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe" /RegServer4- Add this to the registryWindows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Compatibility]5- Now create your Windows Sidebar shortcut in Accessories and you are done Shortcut Name: Windows SidebarComment/Info Tip: Displays personalized slideshows, news feeds, and other customized information on the desktop. ricktendo
Yea I forgot (updated instructions above)The new Windows Sidebar after KB943411 will not run unless it finds a specific registry entry. You can download the regfix here and merge it into the registryOr you can copy and paste this into notepad and save it as a .reg file and add it that wayWindows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Compatibility]Thats it!... Your Sidebar should work now BTW the 3rd command (sidebar.exe /RegServer) does not generally show any pop ups, thats 100% normal Edited April 20, 2008 by ricktendo64

Sony
Hello there I just found this older thread and thought to post my issue here.First of all, I am using a vLited Vista /w SP1. I removed some components, added drivers etc.I kept the sidebar, cause I like using some nifty gadgets.Basicly I am using those you can see here: http://addgadget.com/As you notice, those gadgets all have some timeline drawing of e.g. CPU / Network / Memory usage and such. The gadgets self do work - however, the gadgets don't draw those usage graphs for me (I am talking aboutthese yellow / greenish lines at the bottom of each gadget). Neither of those gadgets does. The area is just"blacked out" for me.Is it possible, that they rely on a component or service, which I removed with vLite, to acquire the informationin order to display it ?Thanks for any reply in advance Sony Edited September 28, 2008 by Sony

Sony
Aww bummer - but does your answer imply, that a non "vLited" / "nlited" OS would display it properly ?
beats
Most apps - like those sidebar applets - use WMI (and/or COM+) to draw stuff like counters. Also check if the Performance Logs and Alerts service is enabled.
