I found this nice program that converts docx files to rtf files. It's the only one I know of that is both free and client based

Careful, This does not open all pages in .docx files - Sure was hoping this would be the thing, since i'm still using office 97.

Basically telling people to use NOT proprietary formats, if they want to "talk" with me.

Works fine for me, although I deal only in text based files. The guy updates the program pretty frequently, maybe the next version will be better. The only problem is that the author rarely updates the web page when he updates the program.
