i have a legit copy of winxp on this computer, but i got no winxp install disc from the manufactuer (they just gave me their own "system restore" disc with all sorts of random crap on it). i try to run nlite and point it to my c:/windows/i386 folder instead, but it says "cd ident file not detected!" and says i need to copy win51c to the c:/windows/ directory. so is it possible to make an nlite cd without actually having the original winxp cd? thanks.

Moved to nlite forum. Previous poster is correct, though, this has been asked before here numerous times. Please use the search functionality of the forums for quicker answers.

i read the link to the bart's pe forum, but is that going to help me? if i slipstream my i386 files, it won't ask for the cd anymore?

also, i DID use the search function, but it apparently doesn't allow any strings with words which contain fewer than 3 characters, so i couldn't get any results for "nlite no winxp cd," which seemed to me to be the most likely thing to search for.

The idea of the given thread is:

1) forget for one moment nlite

2) recreate a XP CD from the files you have

3) the problem "nlite no winxp cd" becomes "nlite WITH winxp cd"

;)

<nlite> says "cd ident file not detected!" and says i need to copy win51c to the c:/windows/ directory.

Nothing magic about them.

  • OEM Win XP Pro = Win51IP
  • OEM Win XP Home = Win51IC
  • OEM Win XP Pro SP1 = Win51IP.SP1
  • OEM Win XP Home SP1 = Win51IC.SP1
  • ...

Those files contain just the text "Windows"

Just create the missing file using notepad!
