homebody Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I have XPHome. I share my pc with other family members. I used to be able to go from my user account to another from my account. I can still do this easily. From another account I can't access my own! I may have done something with NTFS but it would have been a year ago or more and I don't remember. It's much easier if I'm on one user account to be able to access the other. My username no longer is seen in any list when I click "my computer" from another user account. I've made sure I'm listed as an administrator. Any ideas on what I may have done and how to reverse it or what might be the problem is appreciated.
Arie Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 To be honest, I don't quite understand what you're trying to do, how you're trying to do this and what the exact problem is which you encounter then. Sorry. I assume you're using Fast User Switching to switch between users? You're logged in as yourself and then you can switch to any other user account, but when you log in using any other user account you can't switch to your own user account anymore? In which list is your user account missing? I hope that you can explain in a bit more detail.
Ponch Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I may have done something with NTFS but it would have been a year ago or more and I don't remember. If you had FAT32 before, you could access all folders from all accounts as there was no security on the file sysytem.I remember there is a setting somewhere in XP Home to make profiles "private" or something like that. Maybe there is a way to undo this.Anyway, if you are an administrator, you should be able to see other's profiles. Unless this is not what your problem is.
homebody Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 My fast user switching works fine for everyone. If I'm in my user account, or anyone else's, and then click on My Computer my user name is not on the list. This makes it difficult to do things from the other accounts. I must do all "their" stuff from my account because I can't easily access mine from theirs. If I'm on another's user acct. and am changing their myspace background for them but need a photo from my user account I can't easily access it from theirs. Yes, I can do all this from my own acct but I'd rather do their stuff from their's and have access to mine when I'm there. I can't figure out why, for about the past year, I no longer see my account listed in this area for everyone to see. I am an administrator and when on the other administrator acct mine isn't on the list when one clicks "my computer."I definitely have NTFS but I don't remember if that's always been the case. Thanks everyone!!!
Arie Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 When you click on "My Computer" you normally never see any user accounts, so I still have no idea what you're on about I'm afraid Apperantly you installed certain software which does make user accounts show up in "My Computer", or you used a script or tweak of some sort to enable this, but this is not normal behaviour.
homebody Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 I share my pc with other people. After I boot, click on my user icon (from other users icons), click start, click documents/pics/music/or network places there is an option (from the window that opens, lets say Pictures) to go to "Other Places""My Computer" is one of the Other Places in this area. I believe this to be normal. When I click on My Computer from any area or from any user account I see the disc drives and hardware connected to my pc along with all the users...and mine was also there but not now.Perhaps there is an answer for this situation.Thank you again for your time and efforts.
submix8c Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I believe Ponch may have partially hit on your problem (re "private profile").Also, have you by chance set the attributes to "hidden"? This would prevent it from being "seen" using standard Folder View settings (Tools->Folder Options->View with "Do Not Show Hidden Files And Folders" checked).

I went to Tools-Folder Options-View with "Do Not Show Hidden Files And Folders" and it is not checked. The "show hidden" is checked.I feel like we're getting close. I can almost remember doing...something. I really do appreciate all of the input.Thank you so very much, submix8c.
homebody Posted February 28, 2008 Author Posted February 28, 2008 I still haven't found an answer to my problem.Any advice is appreciated. If more info is needed I'd be glad to provide. I'll likely need directions on how to do so.Thanks again!
