I found a 'DOS' style app inside the main system files. What does it to?

Here is a screen:post-108167-1199319140_thumb.png

It's 16-bit based and it cannot access the hard disk while XP is running. It tells me after I select language.

"nrestore.exe" appears to be a DOS-based Restore utility (after using Nero to do a System backup to CD/DVD?). Gleaned this from a google-search...

So basically the restore part f the disk-imager in Nero? (if it has one)

Actually a backup/restore program in Nero that goes to CDs. Nero BackItUp would be what it is called. NRESTORE.EXE would be a DOS restore option in case you would back up your entire drive, and then hose the drive for some reason.

But from what I read in the docs, the first CD it turns out when you use that option should be bootable and have the program on it, so there shouldn't be too much to worry about with it (unless you want to make a disk yourself or the CD isn't bootable for some reason).

@Glen9999 - Sounds like a relatively accurate expanation. Wouldn't use Nero for that myself. I use Ghost to create images on a "spare" partition. In the case of a CD Restore, I would (if I did it) Ghost the partition to a size-limited set of Ghost files (using "compression", so it would "fit") then burn to cd/dvd-RW. Boot from a Ghost Boot floppy, then restore from cd/dvd. Somehow I'm just not sure I would use Nero for "Backitup"; won't swear to this, but it may be just a glorified "MS Backup" to cd/dvd, where you have to specify what files to back up...

But I'm an oddball, hey!

It depends on what's available to you and what you're willing to pay. For a personal situation, I'm not sure I would purchase Ghost (too much money for as little as it would get used), but if I had enough occasion to use it, I probably would. It might be worth looking into the Nero option just to play around with it, but for most applications I can think of, I'd rather have the spare partition.

Of course, my main problem with most backup solutions is trying to image the drive while the OS is running.

Have you looked into BartPE?
