coleman01 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Hi,I wondered if anyone could help me with a question.I have a network at the school I work in. It is restricted in all ways you would expect via policies, including preventing access to the C drive for students. Students have access to mapped drives and that's it.Windows Search is also disabled. (i.e. they cannot use the find utility when they have lost something!)My question is, is it possible to enable Windows Search and not have any security implications? I.e. The C drive would still be inaccessible. I am assuming that enabling it, will allow them to search for files only in the drives they have access to?Many thanks,Chris

Yes, There r security implications (If your sys-Admin has isabled it). One can execute virus's or change/execute system files to diable security features.2. Yes, you can do the job of providing searching using either Sharepoint portal or the newly launched Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express, which is free. And yes, You can implement ANY security features to disable or restrict your seacrhing folders and even filetype(s).regards.mynewsin Edited December 2, 2007 by mynewsin
nitroshift Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Hello coleman01 and welcome to THE forum! As a piece of advice: don't mess with the security implemented by your administrators... Always try and talk to them rather than hacking in the security system
PC_LOAD_LETTER Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 As a piece of advice: don't mess with the security implemented by your administrators... Always try and talk to them rather than hacking in the security system I'm gonna have to second this advice. Usually the amount of security applied to a deployed machine is directly related to how many people could/would circumvent it. If you bypass a security restriction, you could find yourself locked down even further.as for finding files on the network drive is concerned, how much stuff are you storing on that drive? I'm just not seeing finding files on a remote drive being that big of a feature unless there are further restrictions (such as not being able to create folders)
