Daniel-J Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Sorry if this seems a bit out of place for the forum, but my wife uses Facebook and she has noticed that it has been giving her increasing problems. Things such as links not working properly, constantly having to refresh a page to get it to work properly a second or maybe even a third time, and many other proplems. We've used Facebook on an XP computer and never have the same problems under the same account. Do any other Windows 98 users have problems with Facebook or other websites that apparently run fine on other computers?
Chozo4 Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 (edited) I doubt it's an O/S issue at all but rather it all boils down to the internet browser. Have you tried using a different browser or updating Internet Explorer (if that's what you use)? Since it's 'newer' websites having difficulties it's likely related to certain standards being used and website coding methods. It could also be whereas the webmaster themself are maliciously adding a browser / OS check to discourage certain userbases. However, that can be easily avoided by changing the browsers AGENT string. Edited October 16, 2007 by Chozo4
galahs Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Browser issue for sure. What Web Browser do you use?Do you have the latest Flash Player installed.Do both computers have the same speed internet connection?
Daniel-J Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 I use IE6. However, I do not suscribe to Microsoft updates. But I never have! Facebook USED to work, but no longer does properly anymore. Do you think I need directX 9? Maybe I should get all the critical updates from Microsoft?
galahs Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Couldn't hurt...more importantly make sure you have the latest flash versionGo here and make sure you have at least 9.0.47 http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/Note: Flash 9 websites need a computer with MMX capabilities to work properly. Pentium with MMX, Pentium 2, Athalon with 3Dnow or higher!
Daniel-J Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 Okay, the updates did it! At first, I updated ALL critical updates, but then that messed up the configuration of RP7 by Thithy. Then I had to roll back and remove RP7. It's too bad because it was nice. But not really necessary. Now it's all good!
Chozo4 Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 (edited) Okay, the updates did it! At first, I updated ALL critical updates, but then that messed up the configuration of RP7 by ThithyThats because the other packs overwrote some critical files needed by Revolutions pack. Install order is the service packs and THEN revolutions pack. Just reinstall revolutions and you'll be set. Edited October 16, 2007 by Chozo4
Andrew T. Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 A few additional thoughts, just to tie up loose ends:Website content rendering is indeed dependent upon browsers, not OSes and the versions thereof. Unless a site is (needlessly) doing user-agent sniffing, it is impossible for it to be incompatible specifically with Windows 98.DirectX is for games, and has no effect whatsoever on web browsers or web browsing.Glad you solved your "problem," though! FWIW, I access Facebook regularly myself from Mozilla Firefox 1.5 on Windows 95, and have no problems doing so.
