Upgrading older PC

Hi All,

First off let me say that this is an awesome forum and kicks @ss.

I have an old PC that was picked up for $0. You know, one man's junk is another man's treasure, well just call me Fred G. Sanford. Anyway this PC has a socket 370 Intel mobo with a Whitney chipset and a Celeron 333 processor. I tried swapping out the processor with a celeron 800 and then with a PIII 800, both of which I am pretty sure are good. However neither would POST, so I placed the original processor back in the socket.

Any idea why no POST with either processor, short of having 2 bad procs? Is the Whitney specific to the type of socket 370 processor that it can run?

That motherboard simply doesn’t support Coppermine Cores (CU), so your kind of stuck with that.

The fastest CPU that will fit would be a "Pentium II based" celeron 533.

They can be hard to find...but fortunately for you I have an ace up my sleeve.

StarMicro has them for $8. They even have a CoolerMaster heatsink you can add to the order for another $7.

heh, reminds me of the P4 i found one time...except i nabbed another P4 CPU like it [luckily]...people got rid of it for a fried CPU, i stuck in a new one, no issues here on in. havent payed for a thing in that P4 [512mb of RAM, 40GB samsung PATA, matrox millenium dual head, soundblaster 5.1]

just one thing i've learned from the dump is that no matter how nice it looks, you've always got the risk of it not working how you want it to.

it would be awesome to see you turn it into some awesome custom linux box...got it free, why not keep it free?

That´s almost for free ...

StarMicro was one of those finds years ago that you keep around "just in case". I've been able to find upgrade CPUs on that site for older systems on numerous occassions when the right CPU just couldn't be found anywhere else. Some of their CPUs are pulls* though...but they still carry a 30-day warranty so if you get it busted they'll replace it.

* CPU 'pulls' are processors that were pulled from old systems...usually retired servers.

Indeed, you can see when it’s a pre-owned (what a word ) CPU, a 1GHz for example stays in 100 US$ so those ones I presume are new while the 933 goes for 11 bucks or so... Would be cool if they chip international, could come in handy .

Thanks for the quick responses and info. I just want to use this PC as an 'experimental' unit; not my main PC. But I think I can afford $15 to upgrade the processor.
