I created an iso using vlite 1.0 final using the session.ini below, and Vista Firewall fails to load. Service-specific error code 5. Could it be ICS that is needed?

in xp that is the case. but i thought the vista had a separate service for the firewall and internet connect sharing. did you check to make sure the firewall service was running.

I actually discovered it when I tried to enable Remote Desktop. It failed and complained that Windows Firewall is not running, therefore it cannot auto config remote desktop.

Next, I confirm it is set to autostart, but currently not running. I manually start it, failed with error code 5.

I just reviewed my session again and still can't find anything else that could be the cause. Can't possibly be IIS or Windows SAT... I'm beginning to be convinced WFW is dependent on ICS.

that is weird that there is an rror trying to start it. did u set it to auto and try restarting the computer.

It's been thru restart, yes.

The firewall service was autostart to begin with. I didn't set it autostart, as you can see from session.ini no removing/tampering in that area.
