Unattended install method hasn't changed from 1.4.2_01.

Exactly how do you install this silently? Every Java release since 1.4.1 is not extractable, so I'm not quite sure what to do with this.

ADDLOCAL is currently set to install the core components (jrecore) and some extra stuff which I found useful (extra). There's one more option, but I forgot what it was . Just search Sun's site for silent install and look for the one with 1.4.2 in its URL.

Also, if you're like me and don't like the system tray icon that comes up when java applets load, put the following registry entry in:

AWESOME! Thank you for that. That is the ONE thing that bothers me about SunJava more than anything else. I hate that stupid tray icon always popping up.

There appears to be two different exes. Different names, different sizes.

What exactly is the difference between them?

'j2re-1_4_2_01-windows-i586.exe' can be grabbed from here.

'j2re-1_4_2_02-windows-i586-p.exe' can be grabbed from here.

One is the offline install and one requires an internet connection (it downloads the files during setup). Download the one with the p.

But they're both roughly the same size. Check them out for yourself. I selected Offline installation in both of the links.

Here's some more switches for silent installation.

IEXPLORER=1 ;Sets J2SE as Default Java VM for IE

MOZILLA=1 ;Sets J2SE as Default Java VM for Mozilla

NETSCAPE6=1 ;Sets J2SE as Default Java VM for Netscape 6 or Later

INSTALLDIR=<drive>:\<install_path> ;Set Install Dir for J2SE

Example:

ECHO.
ECHO Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4.2_02 is installing

I've been sprucing up my sun java installation just a few minutes ago, this is what I use to install core java files, and integrate into IE:

j2re-1_4_2_01-windows-i586.exe /s /v"/qn ADDLOCAL=jrecore IEXPLORER=1"

Then the following reg changes:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;Disable Java Update Check on Startup
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"SunJavaUpdateSched"=-
