  1. With the registry it's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Only if there is a problem or you know exactly what you're doing and wish to change a particular setting that can't be done any other way, should you bother messing about in there. If that's not the case, just leave it because you can very easily screw up your system beyond recovery, changing just one setting can do so in the blink of an eye. That said, it's a very powerful tool and comes in very handy but only when you know your way around, so ask before you go and play with any values.
  2. If you go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Driver Signing you can choose the ignore option which should hopefully let you install unsigned drivers remotely. The only thing you need to find out is how to make this change via the registry.
  3. Just been looking through nVidia's latest nForce4 audio drivers and trying to figure out exactly what ks.inf and wdmaudio.inf do as part of the drivers. The two lines are... Include=ks.inf,wdmaudio.inf Needs=KS.Registration,WDMAUDIO.Registration ...but it's not clear to me exactly what they do. Obviously it goes through the respective sections of those files, but beyond that, someone smarter than me would have to share their knowledge. Basically, what is the function of those two files and if the lines are removed, would the drivers still work (what would the differences be)? Thanks.
  4. If anyone is interested, I've finally found the culprit to this annoying problem. It's the tweak used to remove those arrows from shortcut icons (deleting IsShortcut from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile). Undoing this tweak fixes the problem, but now the arrows have returned (it's better this way though). Now, to find another way of getting rid of the arrows.
  5. That was pretty much just the normal nVidia file with certain parts commented out. My latest one, for version 84.21 is below. The only files you need (other than nv4_disp.inf) are nv4_disp.dll, nvapi.dll, nvhwvid.dll, nvoglnt.dll and nv4_mini.sys, all the rest you can delete. Please be aware that my version has only been tested on a 7800GT with Windows XP and so on, just remember that it might not work for you. Also, any control panel applets or anything else that's usually installed with the drivers has been removed, so if you need that functionality you should stick with the normal drivers. 6. Bootvis is another Microsoft tool which performs various optimisations to make your computer start up faster. Oddly, Microsoft themselves say here that it doesn't do anything, but it's a lie. Using the program almost halved the time it took for my computer to boot and hasn't had any adverse affects. Nobody knows why Microsoft no longer support it and even go so far as to say it's useless.
  7. Just wondering, do nf4sys.inf and nvsmbus.inf do anything other than changing device names to "nForce4 HyperTransport Bridge" and "nVidia nForce PCI System Management"? The logical explanation to me would be to do with the Athlon 64/X2's inbuilt memory controller, which Windows doesn't know about, so the names are just changed to stop the infamous yellow exclamation mark in device manager and any prompts to install drivers. Assuming that's true, why are they otherwise different, in that nf4sys.inf installs a "null" service and nvsmbus.inf references machine.inf and what do these respective changes do? Thanks.
  8. Oops, forgot about this thread completely. If anyone is interested, here is my solution - it's not great but it's alright for my needs. - Modify the Feature table of the MSI to display every option for custom installations. - Install only the "Requirements" (no subfeatures) and "Create Adobe PDF" (no subfeatures) options. - Install Adobe Reader, instructions for which you can find in other threads. This just means you have the Adobe PDF Printer to use from any application and Adobe Reader to open and view the files. For me, it took the installation down to under 90 megabytes in total and more importantly eliminated the annoying toolbars and context menu extensions.
  9. Go to My Computer and type in %temp% while the drivers are being unpacked (this is just a shortcut to go to C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp) and look around for the files (they may possibly be a few folders deep). Generally, when programs don't allow you to specify where to extract the files to, they dump them somewhere in the temporary files.
  10. These drivers install a bunch of files to (by default) C:\CanoScan, but I was wondering if there's any way to change this directory to something else? We're working on being able to use the scanner from multiple computers, possibly with varying drive letters and we're also looking into a network based installation. Most of these things we haven't figured out yet, but it would be good to be able to test each option and we'd need to be able to change this directory in the final solution anyway. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
  11. Start -> Run -> services.msc Right-click on "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)", go to Properties and change "startup type" to Automatic.
  12. We have Adobe Photoshop CS2 with corporate licenses for many machines, but the media kit is French (the company is based in France and most employees speak it as their primary language). The problem is, we need to install a few instances in English. Adobe says it's legal to do so, the licenses are not language specific, but they want to charge us for an English media kit to install it from. The files are there for a variety of languages, but the installer files seem to be French only. We've tried modifying the "Property" table of "Adobe Photoshop CS2.msi" but haven't had much luck. As above, we've got the necessary files, it's just a matter of specifying English rather than French. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
  13. My monitor is an LCD (Samsung 740B) so the refresh rate shouldn't make a difference. It's set at 60 Hz (default) but changing it so 75 Hz (only other option) didn't help the problem. My graphics card is a 7800GT - was using the 84.21 drivers, reverted back to 81.98 which didn't help then uninstalled the nVidia drivers altogether to go back to the normal Windows ones and still had the same problem. It seems like it's a Windows problem rather than drivers, a setting somewhere isn't quite right.
  14. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG -> System -> CurrentControlSet -> Control -> Video. Now, there should be a random string of characters there which represents the model of the video card in your system (for example, mine is {23A77BF7-ED96-40EC-AF06-9B1F48677 32A}). Open whichever one is there and click on "0000". You can then change the values for DefaultSettings.XResolution and DefaultSettings.YResolution.
  15. Well said. I've used Adobe Reader for years and never had any complaints, I just removed "Speed Launch" or whatever it installed to the Startup folder and everything was fine. But this is my first experience with Acrobat Professional and it hasn't been good so far. It would be great just to have a printer installed to convert documents to PDF and a single program to view/design them. For whatever reason, they decided they needed context menus and toolbars all over the place and something like 15 executables (no idea what each one does). Just hope someone has already done the hard yards to get rid of the unnecessary junk, cause otherwise it's going to take a long time sorting through the MSI file figuring out what's needed and what's not.
  16. Thanks. I downloaded InstallShield 11.5 - I was previously using Orca (Microsoft's MSI Editor, pretty much the same as the Direct Editor here) so it's much easier to work with having the clearer layout and whatever. Anyway, I can slipstream Acrobat 7.07 quite easily, but I'm still stuck with removing the context menus, Office toolbars and startup processes. If anyone could point me in the right direction for each of these it would be great.
  17. If anybody would be able to let me know how to do the following, it would be much appreciated. Basically, what we want is to stop Adobe Acrobat Professional being so intrusive - "taking over" the whole system. We would like the install to be as small as possible (removing unnecessary components) and leave out all the context menu entries, leave out the toolbars in Microsoft Office, don't run any processes at startup and so on. I've started to try a few things myself, but I quickly realised I was out of my depth. I'm not very experienced with Acrobat Professional so I don't even know what each component does and I'm still not confident with modifying .msi files (I've changed a few things for Photoshop CS2, Maya and so on, but they were easier than this). So, could somebody please guide me through all the changes, it would be a great help. Thanks.
  18. This isn't really a visual styles tweak or whatever, but it's got to do with desktop icons, so it's probably the best forum to post the thread in. Anyway, here is a little picture of what happens. When the computer boots and whenever the desktop is refreshed, all the icons look like the top one (they have a darker shadow behind the icon labels). But whenever icons are clicked or selected, they look like the bottom one (lighter shadow). Now, obviously, this isn't a big deal, but it's starting to bug me. It's one of those ones where you just try to find a quick solution and end up tieing yourself in knots trying to find out (you know those ones, right). Anyway, it's not ClearType, it's not "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" in Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance and so on. The question is, does anyone know how to solve this little mystery? It doesn't matter whether the shadows are light or dark, as long as it's one or the other the whole time. Thanks.
  19. Just been setting up Maya 7 by doing an administrative install then modifying the "Maya 7.0.msi" file to reflect some of the requirements we have. The first is in regards to the license file (Maya uses Macromedia's Flex License Manager) and where it is located. As default, a folder is created in the root of the C:\ drive (irrespective of where it's installed) and the license file (aw.dat) is stored there, but we require the license files to be elsewhere. So, under the "Property" table of "Maya 7.0.msi" there is "FLEXLM_DIR", the value of which has been changed from the folder mentioned before to a more suitable location for our needs. However, when Maya runs, it says it can't find the license file. We then tried setting the environment variable LM_LICENSE_FILE to the correct value, but this still didn't work, Maya still couldn't find the license file (it seems it's still looking in the default folder). Obviously, there are going to be very few people who have experience with Maya, although perhaps this applies with the free version (Personal Learning Edition) too, but if anyone is able to help it would be much appreciated. Whoever would've thought it would be so difficult to license a product, we just want to change the location of the license file.
  20. I'm no expert at these kinds of things, but I've been trying to figure out how to install Photoshop CS2 without Adobe LM Service (adobelmservice.exe) as it's been causing a few conflicts, otherwise it wouldn't be such a big issue. I've tried removing any reference to it from the .msi file, but when I run Photoshop it now says "An error has been detected with a required application library and the product cannot continue". So, I assume there's some sort of check in the Photoshop executable which looks for and starts Adobe LM Service. What I'm asking is if it's possible not to install it (modifying the .msi) and if it's possible not to look for it (modifying the .exe) when Photoshop starts. If so, how?
  21. Below is my version of nv4_disp.inf, but this is for version 81.98, the latest available from nVidia. The only other files you need are nv4_disp.dll, nvapi.dll, nvcod.dll, nvhwvid.dll, nvoglnt.dll, nv4_disp.cat and nv4_mini.sys, and they must be in the same folder as the nv4_disp.inf file. This installs only the drivers themselves, none of the extra things bundled along with it. Some people may find them useful, but to me they're just useless annoyances. You can see where certain lines are commented out (with colons - ";") and there are a couple of other things deleted as well, but if you compare this with the original file, you should be able too see how to do it for yourself and how to leave or delete parts of the driver as you wish. ; NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Display INF file ; Copyright © NVIDIA Corporation. 22. For some reason, it doesn't work like that. If you delete the files, Adobe Photoshop CS2.msi won't install because it looks for the other files to install with it. If you then go and delete any reference to any of the other programs in the .msi, it still manages to find and install them.
  23. Just figured out an easy way of doing it. Go to Start -> Run and type in msiexec.exe /a "*path to wherever the file is*\Adobe Photoshop CS2.msi". This extracts the files and puts them in a location you specify. Now, the next step would be to navigate to the folder you chose and run Adobe Photoshop CS2.msi, but there's a bug in the installer which causes it to stop when it's trying to find "photoshop.cer". The problem is that there's an extra space in the directory, so you have to edit the .msi file. Once you open it, click on "Files and Folders" and navigate through [CommonAppDataFolder] -> Adobe -> Updater and right click on Certs and open it's properties. Remove the underscore from "Directory Identifier" and the spaces from "Source Location" and "Target". There you have it, a successfully modified .msi. Adobe Photoshop CS2.msi should work now and you'll end up with Photoshop but not Bridge, Stock Photos, Help Center or Gamma. Enjoy.
  24. This is the guide for Nero 7.
  25. Greetings. I only discovered this site today, just after I managed to install Nero 7 with only Burning ROM and Express, not all the other components and particularly not Nero Scout. It sure would've come in handy to read the guides here before doing it all myself, but I suppose I've learned more this way. Anyway, my next mission is to install Photoshop CS2 without Bridge, Stock Photos and Help Center. It's more difficult than it looks because if you just run the Photoshop .msi it automatically installs the rest too. I managed to install only Photoshop by running the other .msi's first, which creates entries in Add/Remove Programs for them individually rather than all coming under Photoshop, then uninstalling them after I installed Photoshop itself. But I'd really rather being able to not install everything else in the first place. So, I tried editing the .msi file, firstly by removing any reference to any of the extra programs (but the Photoshop .msi then refused to run) and secondly by removing any reference to the other .msi files (Adobe Bridge.msi and so on) but somehow Photoshop managed to install them anyway. So, does anyone know how to achieve this without having to install the other .msi's first? Thanks.
