  1. Hi, I'm gonna soon ask my friend to build me a brand new computer which will have a dual 98SE/ XP pro boot. And not vista. Can't wait! Can anyone reccommend the best possible processor/mainboard/graphics card/sound card that would be fine for 98se and also work great in XP. I know certain things like hyperthreading aren't supported in 9x, but it would be a bonus to have that for xp games and stuff. I don't want to stop using 98se as I still really like how fast, smooth and easy it is to use, so it would be great to have a new pc with XP and 98 both running lightning fast Looking to have 1gb RAM and an 80GB HD too. Not that worried about cost but anything under $500 (£300) to spend on the components would be perfect. Big thanks
  2. Hi guys, I just stumbled across this topic from Google. I still use Win98SE on a fairly new system that could run Vista (...), but I'm perfectly happy with 98. I have a laptop with XP on it but still would rather use 98 because I feel it's quicker and less bloated, it's secure, rarely crashes, 8mb ADSL runs like a dream on it, and I have no problems with Office XP and Flash/Dw MX 2004 which all run fine on it. Whoever it was that described it like an old reliable car is completely right. It's a shame FF 3 won't 'officially' be supported, as FF is a really nice browser even though I use Opera more. But a compatible version for 98se/me would be awesome. I and many other w98se users would be extremely grateful that this good OS would still be very useable when it comes down to web standards. Keep up the good work.
  3. I'd like to ask the same question. I need to reinstall 98SE after my shell extensions and start menu program groups all disappeared, but I have the SP installed. Will I need to uninstall that first, or can 98SE be reinstalled on top of the SP?
  4. Let's run down the list. Off the top of my head, Windows 98 SE: Is stable if you don't have too much stuff open at once and take good basic care of the PC, Is more compatible with older software than 2000+, Is more compatible with older devices, Carries good USB support (and with the unofficial service pack and Flash drive USB support, it's as good as 2000+) Still works with most new software, Has a better file search utility, Has a better scandisk utility, Has a generally faster loading/shutting down time, Is *MUCH* more secure than 2000+ even without a firewall, Has MS-DOS, which 2000+ lacks, useful for lots of things, Has more than decent networking capabilities, No need to login each time, Most major components still compatible, It is easier to access deep into the system with 98SE than 2000+. I have also had major problems when installing 2000 before: It thought I had 3 monitors and a generic TV, and the mouse locked up more than half the time on bootup. Went straight back to 98se.
  5. It's a pleasant surprise that Microsoft, who I thought were fixated on XP, released a new update for 98 and ME, which I felt sure they weren't ever going to touch again. For once in a lifetime, I have to congratulate Microsoft on this
  6. It's a great update, and thanks to the authors for doing it. I've noticed a leap in performance when opening programs and much less errors. I'm sticking with 98SE, even when I get a new computer - I really do not like XP! (the 'updated' find files, no msdos, speed, newbie style interface and poor security all put me off!) Now, there are a few issues that I've noticed ever since installing the SP, neither of which are that serious but all the same a little annoying: I can't restart the computer now without it hanging on the "Shutting down" screen. It's only with restarting - shutting down works fine and so does hot restarting - but a normal restart completely hangs the computer on that screen. Any advice on this? For some reason, also, I've been having problems with Media Player. Sometimes, part through a song the sound just stops and I have to stop and play it again to get it going. Also, once or twice, the sound cuts out and all other sounds refuse to play, forcing me to restart the PC. I think this is just with WMP, though, as I have Classic Media Player which seems fine, so I'll try reinstalling WMP and telling you what happens. Any ideas on the first point? Any help would be appriciated, thanks!
