  1. If you plan to run Win 98/SE as long as possible, I suggest you double up on the hardware. I did this with my Dell C610. I have 2 of the exact same computers. When one fails due to hardware, I have a backup and just swap drives. I have not got Windows 9x running in VMs like I want to. Once I move all of my laptops to 64bit I will focus more on tweaking it. Development for Win9x is far behind, we have a few people who's helping, but when they have left the scene we'll be sol.

RegClean.exe - This was Microsoft official, be wary of imposters using a similar product name. Think the version is RegClean 4.1a (build 7364.1, December 30, 1997). Some claim this isn't stable, i've never had a problem, plus it creates a restorable registry file in the regclean.exe directory. As with all registry cleaners, back up existing registry first, only use one registry cleaner per session until a fresh boot confirms existing sofware runs well.

I never had a problem with RegClean either, the reason I added it to the SP years ago. Its very lightweight and robust.

Research at NASA has however proved that comparing apples with oranges has some scientific validity, even after thousands or millions people used the analogy as an example of something impossible or improper, JFYI:

Man... You have stirred up some controversy with this reference. Thank you, ol' great one!!!!! I will be debating this over the holidays. Happy Holidays to everyone.

    P.S

We are already fighting. Thanks a lot. LOL

I love 98SE as well, but there are obstacles that will NEVER be fixed, It's sad, I know.

When 64bit becomes the norm, Windows 9x will have to use Virtual Box/Machines or stock up on older hardware. I totally agree with your post. Some things we'll never get to experience using Win9x. When newer browsers requires a dual core system minimum, we have already lost the fight before the war have begun.  Running new software on older hardware does one no good if the software needs a high-powered machine, when it requires 64bit architect, USB 3 etc..

  5. Yes, I agree with DougB

98SE2ME + U98SESP3 are an ultimate combination. If someone is willing to patch the english files for their native language, I would help them build a SP. You wouldn't have to patch every file either, which is a good thing.

Vista is a different case, it actually sucked, and it sucked big initially.

You know better than that.... LoL .... You are going to start a war for being politically correct. Never really got the chance to play with Vista but have heard many compare it to Windows ME. WinME did have some nice features that was lacking in Win98/SE.

  7. I use Win9x for older software purposes, nostalgia  and networking. Don't need a newer browser on the machine because I run Slackware Linux for that. My windows 98 SE machine did everything I needed it to do. Outlook Express, movies, music, games ,Remote Desktop to my WinXP Pro etc.... My next project is getting Win9x running in VMs. Working flawlessly as possible, its a hell of a task. Once all the older hardware becomes obsolete, we are not going to have much of a choice but to use VMs. That's why I'm getting a head start now. After Win 7, I will never upgrade to another Windows unless for monetary reasons. I'm done with the new Windows.

U98SESP3 is not an all-or-none SP. It presents a long list of updates, modifications and add-ons from which you can choose the ones you want.

I have been preaching this for a long time. Some people think when you click, it just installs a bunch of my personal tools etc... 99% of the tools/options are MICROSOFT. I tried my best to keep 3rd party apps out, I even removed a bunch. Its only a couple in there, but other than that its all MICROSOFT. I gave people the option to choose what they wanted and some still complained. The Linux community isn't any better. But thank you for noticing, I believe you are the first to point it out. After 6 years, its still going strong and only had a few issues with a handful of users. Its safe to say its stable.

So i have updated to SP3 3.5.2 and its fixed, so it means that Windows 98 has from design broken not stable framerate? I dont remember that from old times, but i never had highend hardware.

What is know biggest save ammount of Ram? Make sense install KernelEX too (from gaming stability front of view).

You need to update to the latest version. 3.57

     Nothing major.

Well, this is certainly disappointing. There used to be several guys around here who knew about these things, or were willing to test them. I guess they've all moved on. Where's Axcel216 when you need him? Oh hell, I'd settle for Problemchylde right about now :)

Looks like I'll have to test these files myself. The latest unofficial "update pack" for XP that I found was XPSP3_QFE_UpdatePack_20170619. It's designed to be "slipstreamed," so the files don't need to be patched.

Inside was a newer version of GDIPLUS.DLL. It's a Vista file. Version 5.2.6002.24064. File date 02/13/17. 1,753,088 bytes.

It seems to work under SE. There are no missing dependencies. Of course, ti wouldn't register, but I don't believe any version of GDIPLUS will. My network works. I've got Internet access. As far as I can tell, it hasn't screwed anything up yet. Looks like it's safe enough to test.

I don't rightly know what GDIPLUS is used for. I believe it's got something to do with Visual C. I'll be sure to let you guys know if my machine blows up :)

I'm still here, lurking in the shadows.
