Well I brought a Q4OS Live CD to the school with me. Q4OS is able to connect to the network just fine. So it's not a hardware problem. I'm planning to install Q4OS in a dual boot, but If anybody knows of another solution or a third party wireless client I could test, it would be most welcome.

Put your router in WPA2 only and see if Windows XP connect.

Linus is just taking a break.  He made it clear in the announcement that he still loves the project.

Linux itself would still be fine even if Linus were hit by a bus

That's what Bill Gates did and look what happened. Windows hasn't been the same.

Alright, so apparently my home internet is of the 'n' type. How can I connect to it?

Can some fall back, and some can't?

I had the same issue and the only way for Windows XP to connect, is to set the router in WPA + WPA2 mode. It will not connect when router is set to WPA2 only. I know this for a fact "at least" on my set up, because I tried multiple combinations. This worked for me, hopefully you as well. Nonetheless, WinXP still shows being connected to WPA2. Not sure whats that about.

I've took a look at the .sys file itself.

The one from my Atheros' WiFi card is designed with 9x in mind, the Realtek USB WiFi one is not.

I'm afraid there will be no drivers for your USB WiFi dongle.

Code 2 in non-Win9x Network drivers means no luck, the VXD of Win98SE does not understand the SYS file, sorry.

In the future, try to find out the device ID of the device before you buy it. Then, check if the drivers are available. In this way, you won't waste time. That's how I knew what WiFi card to buy for my ThinkPad. Just a tip from experience :)

It means he will need rloew's wdmex patch.

  5. I'm dual-booting Windows XP Pro /w SP4 integrated /w all POSReady updates /w Slackware Linux 14.2 32bit on a Compaq Presario C700.

Everything is running smooth with the Ext2Fsd driver accessing my Linux partition.

I'll just keep buying older/supported hardware which is probably the best solution. I did it for Windows 98 SE.

After that runs dry, we are going to have to start mastering VMs.

I do have an Inspiron 15 3521 AMD sitting in the closet right now. For starters I don't like AMD, secondly I hate I can't run WinXP on it.

@PROBLEMCHYLD Tor? When you use TOR you are blindly trusting some unknown people to get access to internet. If you access to sensible data while you are proxed with TOR, it's likely your data is gonna be stolen. I would recommend TOR to access to the deep web or to surf internet without logging into any site. Whenever you log in, you are sending your data over the net and when you use TOR you use someone else computer or server to access internet. Many people have been sniffing packages sent by users using TOR by hosting a TOR server themselves. I would recommend a normal VPN. I personally use NordVPN. It's kinda cheap, reliable, it doesn't store your payment details, it doesn't seel your data and it also offers you the option to have the traffic scanned by their antivirus installed in their server which could also block commercials (like a built-in ad block).

I never use Tor to login. Just surf the web and nothing more. After being a victim of identity theft, I move very carefully on the net. No social media accounts, use prepaid phones when email accounts wants verification, all email accounts under pseudonym, no banking... Nothing on the net besides my ip address has my government name is why I use tor. My ISP changes my address every couple of months. All the extra software like malware, virus scanners etc.. didn't prevent anything. It gives people a false sense of security, (like myself in the past). I have been Malware and virus free for some time now without the extra bloat. A good firewall and common sense is all one needs. I also dual- boot Linux.

    P.S.

Lycos mail has locked me out of my account unless I pay a subscription fee. All is lost but I'm ok with that.

Fell like it's worth mentioning here that theres an add on for firefox called No Script.  https://noscript.net/

And to be totally obvious about this peice of software is that It hardens Firefox attack serfice so hard that you cannot even view most web pages properly until u set up whitelists.  Like if you only use firefox and no script it is impossible to get a virus browsing a web page.  That means the only way your getting a virus is to download somthing and click it.  That is pretty much your own stupidity at that point. For not scanning the file for virus.  You could get a virus through email, but probably not webmail.  And only from an attachment again you are clicking things.

Addblock Plus + Noscript + HTTPs Everywhere + maybe ghostery.  You are secure.  Very.

I use uBlock Origin & NoScript. I ditched HTTPs Everywhere and use NoScript for that as well. Pretty safe and private browsing.  Configured Pale Moon with the tor settings for extra security. I use the autoproxy plugin too because I use Tor and I2P. Don't need a virus scanner and haven't used one in years.

Sorry, something unexpected happened and Window Live Mail must close. Your most recent changes may not have been saved.

I am using SP4 if that makes any difference.

There is not so much of TOR "exit nodes" to not block them all by their IPs. Any website administrator can do this if he want. So, despite that TOR (if used properly) is effective in hiding your identity, it can't guarantee you to pass censorship.

I'm using Tor and I2P side-by-side and they both get the job done. I use Pale Moon with (Tor) instead of the (TOR Browser) and so far no issues. Interesting combination.

  12. I'm not sure whats going on, but I did a clean install the other day using SP4 3.1b. I only got about 6 updates. On my older installation with SP4 3.1a, I got a ton of them including Office 2003 updates. What is going on and am I missing something?
