I read that Vista will have alot more support for languages and thus they supply alot more True Type fonts (.ttf)
which can eat up 310 megs of disk space, will I be able to copy them over to Win XP home/pro etc? Will they
work with the Win XP apps?
Is it a simple copy and paste or is there some config utility to run to update a dbms for win xp to look at
before selecting the font to use?

How does one go about disabling an admin(2nd adminstrator) or non-admin (regular user) from being able to use
for example ( a ) USB drive port, (b ) floppy drive, ( c ) CD drive, or the wireless card and yet the other admin (me)
can still use it?
Another thing would be how to give the other users the capability to use the above devices but restrict them to
only being able to read from them, but not write to them (The are not read-only devices) whiles't I (the admin)
would be able to write to them?

In Add or Remove Programs try placing a check in the Show updates check box!
Thanks guys! I never noticed that checkbox in the add/remove programs.
Do you happen to know how to do this in Windows 2000 too? The add/remove windows doesn't
contain this checkbox. I have Windows 2000 Professional at work and it is always showing the
KB numbers that have been installed.

I have two neighbors that have Windows XP.
A ) the first neighbor has a desktop and when windows hotfixes are downloaded and installed,
the KB number , date etc are shown in the add/remove programs list. PC is DELL
B ) the second neighbor has a laptop and when windows hotfixes are downloaded and installed,
the KB number, date "ARE NOT" shown in the add/remove programs list, but programs such
as MSBA v2.x and other such non-MSoft tools show that the KB numbers are installed. PC is HP
How does one control whether Windows XP displays the KB numbers in the add/remove program?
Can this be changed at will? That is I assume one can change a registry value such that
the KB numbers are displayed in the add/remove program and changed again to make them not
visible.
How does one control whether the windows KB fixes are directly integrated into Windows XP or not
with each automatic download and install from MSoft? Is there are registry setting for this too?

IE7 tweaks to move the menu bar to the top of the browser above the address bar (like IE6.x) , along with the
tweaks to restore it. I got this off the internet from a mailing I received.
To move the menu bar above the address bar modify the registry as follows.

Slipping MUI Fixes too.
.... And how to slip MUI patches to the original MUI packs either all the languages or just the one (i.e. like the
spanish one from above)? Do I treat the MUI patch just like a hotfix patch?
.... If I have the MUI pack (5 CD set), can I slip all the MUI patches with the various MUI language files and
reburn an updated one? Nlite wil have to be smart enough to distinquish that the MUI patches are used only when
updating from WIN XP SP1 to SP2?

I removed the googletoolbar and the 3-4 page views before halting disapppeared. Then
I got 12-15 page views before halting again. I then removed the weatherstudio toolbar
and all the problems went away. Moreover, the browser has signaficantly sped up for
page views. I then updated from googletoolbar 3.0.131 to 4.x and the browser is still working.
I haven't reinstalled the weatherstudio toolbar from v3.3.0 to v4.x since alot of the features it has I don't
need anymore since googletoolbar does most of them. So I guess MSoft made some changes
within the last 6 months with the patches that breaks these older toolbar versions thus requiring
an update.

I'm wondering how you could tell it was the Google Toolbar vs. the other
toolbar called WeatherStudio?
I realize that "googleToolbar" appeared
first after the "Exception Analysis" header in the dump followed by the debugger

Is the ordering above how you could tell?
Moreover, the header error message about the "debugger symbols not being the
correct version" a problem? They were the ones to come down. Moreover, how
would I correct this?
The stack dump only showed a connection stuck open which I assumed time outs
after 5 minutes and then the browser will show can't display page with a ServerInfo "getconnection".

Hi,
I have Win 2K Prof Sp4 with all the latest patches. I have IE6sp1 with all the latest patches.
Connection speed T1. I have all the latest XmlCore v3.0, v4.0 and v6.0 install/patches that
IE may need.
Problem:
When I view about 2-4 web pages, the browser will just stop updating from page 4 onward.
The task manager says "No Response" in the applications window or the IE browser entry for this screen
just disappears from the task manager application window list. If I wait about 3-5 minutes, the
browser will start responding again. Then after about 2-4 web pages, the problem continues again.
Variation #1
If a web page pops a web page window, these popped windows will never finish updating and
will be blank until it times out saying it can't display the page. When windows are popped like this
it speeds up the original window to hang. It seems after about 2-4 window pops, everything
shows up as "no response" or disappears from the task manager application list.
Variation #2
During the time the above hang variations are occuring, I can click on the IE shortcut on the
desktop to start another browser session, and have no problems viewing web pages while the
first session is hanging. Then after about 2-4 web page views on the 2nd browser session, it gets
the same problem. Thus, I click on another browser session to repeat the above scenario.
Opinion:
It seems that the browser/operating system is having memory leak problems somewhere
or that it is performing memory garbage collection. I'm not sure.
Question:
Anyone see this on their system? Do you have a solution? Is there some exe, dll, etc file
I'm missing or patch that will clean this up? It sure is slowing down any productivity on
this PC.

From win95/98.
I may be mistaken. Perhaps what I was thinking of was I first installed Win98 which
had an old Adobe Reader. Then after booting into Win98, I then upgraded to Win XP
which does a conversion of the old programs and applications to Win XP. As a result
the old Adobe Reader stuff stays around which then I'll need to upgrade/install to v7.0.x.
Therefore, what I wanted was a way to include Adobe v7 on an Nlited disk and during
the Win98 upgrade to the Nlited disk it would convert the Adobe Reader v5.0/6.0 to the
new version 7.0 without me having to manually delete the old version which sticks around.
Otherwise, I'll have the old and the new version on the desktop after Win XP is installed.
What really makes this confusing is that on the Win XP disk in the following directory
\I386\WIN9XMIG\ACROBAT\
\I386\WIN9XMIG\ACROBAT\FILES\ and all the other subdirectories here
contains alot of files that I believe are the Adobe Reader v5.0/6.0 conversion files.
Thus, I'd like to use NLITE to replace these files on the Win XP disk with the latestequivalent for Adobe Reader V7.0.x such that after upgrading from Win98 that the
conversion of the Adobe Reader v5.0 using the Win XP disk that has the these updated
files will convert it directly to Adobe Reader v7.0 without manually deleting the old version.
There's flash 5 but I've never heard of Acrobat Reader in windows ?The same applies to the Flash software too.
Note: there is all a \WIN9XUPG directory too that may contain things that help with the upgrade
that may need to be replaced.

Is there a tweak to remove the old component Adobe Acrobat reader which I believe is version 3 or 5.0?

I have Win 2K sp4 with the latest IE 6.0 browser. I'm trying to do a windows update and get the following error
code which occurs in two possible variations.
a ). I get, download windows update software, express and custom buttons. When I select get the download
windows update software and follow the various screens, I get the error message and code listed below.
b ). For item (a), I get the error message and code immediately after selecting windows update from the pop
down menu. This problem comes and goes, whereas item (a) above is consistent.
Error message:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view....
[Error Number: 0x80072F78 ]"
Has anybody encountered this error code? It isn't mentioned on MSofts site as a typical error code for
windows download updates.

How does one capture the screens that are displayed during bootup or when Windows XP does a blue screen?
During these steps one isn't logged in yet to do a printscreen to the clipboard.

Both Home and Pro are XP, not different OS types.
You mean so it doesn't ask u to insert ur home edition disc everytime to "prove u qualify for the upgrade product". There was a method w/editing a text file but it doesn't work, WGA marks it as pirate so I just put both my 98 and xp home upgrade into my 2 cd drives so it doesn't ask for it.I wasn't thinking about a combination between two different OS types like Win98 and Win XP Home upgrade.
It's more like Win XP Home upgraded to Win XP Pro. I haven't bought the upgrade license to Pro so
I don't know what the CD will include. It may be additional software for Pro plus the new license.
Thus, instead of inserting two CD's and then installing each one and entering two different licenses, I'd
insert a merged XP Pro version and enter the new Pro license only once. Thus, wondering if Nlite
will be able to do the merge in some future version, or whether it's one of those "Hidden" pieces of
functionality/features that will be made visible in the future.

I'm wondering if one buys a WINXP Pro upgrade software license for the current Home edition one,
can one slip the two together and reburn a merged WINXP Pro CD using Nlite? If not, does anyone
know if there are any steps anywhere that shows how to do this?
Moreover, can I mix a Home OEM version with an Pro Retail version either by:
a ). Installing the Pro overtop of the already installed Home edition? No slip/merge - just install it.
b ). Slip/merging the Pro onto the Home edition and reburn a CD for later reinstall?

Nlite and CD/DVD writer software (i.e. NERO) can create ISO images. These images
can be burned to the CD/DVD.
Question 1:
How can I take the ISO image and with one click send it to a USB flash chip or what
software will do this?
I have a flash chip that is anywhere from 1-4 gigs. I'd prefer to burn (in cd terms) the ISO
image to the flash chip instead of the CD/DVD and don't want to do a file select and
copy to the flash chip one at a time. Moreover, I don't mean to do a simple copy
of the ISO file to the flash chip such that when I do a directory on the chip that I'd
see the "filename.iso" as the only file on the chip. I'd like to see all the files that were
put into the iso file. I hope that I've explained what I'm trying to do clearly.
Question 2:
Moreover, during the creation of the ISO image, NERO complained that the ISO image was
greater than 2 gigs and said it had to be converted to UDF format. I haven't seen
any file extensions with ".UDF".
Can Nlite create the UDF format should the OS and add-ons' be greater than 2 gigs when
creating the ISO format?
Question 3:
Currently, Nlite requires that the OS CD files be copied to the hard drive so that they can be updated.
In the future, will Nlite copy the files to a "virtual" (drive,file,device) on the hard drive so that all the files
and directory structures will be in one file called i.e. "WinXP_Original" and then perform its operations on
this virtual file and create a new "virtual" file called ie. "WinXP_New" which contains all the updated OS files
and directory structures? Then Nlite would make an ISO file from this "WinXP_New" virtual file for later
burning.
Perhaps Nlite can copy all the OS CD files to an ISO file on the hard drive and name it
i.e. "WinXP_Original.iso" and then do it's stuff on this file and out another ISO file i.e. "WinXP_New.iso".
Therefore, this new file is already in ISO format and ready for burning. Similar to the virtual file method.

150 limit for direct or non-direct integration?
I've heard about the 150 limit too.
However, I was wondering if the fixes are directly
integrated into the OS, will there be any cat files generated? Will it slow down when you
exceed 150?
If one doesn't directly integrate the fixes into the OS, then the 150 limit may/will apply then.
Any comments on direct vs. non-direct integration and the 150 fix limit?

I noticed KB885250 OS update patch for ITA isn't listed here. Does MCE require this one?
I had a problem with Nlite v1.0.1 when trying to include it in my XP Home and Pro version when it was put before KB885835. (Numeric order).
I could directly integrate KB885835, but when just just patching the OS without direct integration, nlite
would complain about an unknown error occurred when it got to KB885835. If I did KB885835 by itself
either by direct or non-direct integration, it would be ok. Thus, Nlite has a problem here IMHO.
I was wondering if nlite keeps track of the latest version of the file being integrated or not as
the KB files are merged. Do I have to integrate files in a certain order to guarantee that the only
file version used in all the KB's being integrated is the newest one?
I've integrated KB902400 along with XPize and other hotfixes (that all get completely integrated) but strangely the olecli32.dll installed by the cd is not the one present in KB902400 so windows update offers to install the update again. Hmm, the original files from MSoft for .NET 1.0 and 1.1 self extract into two files. Each version
for .NET then is netfx.msi and netfx1.cab (two files) so I'd think the switches are different and one
must have the 'cab' files around to make it work.

As for .NET v2.0, the file from MSoft is "dotnetfx.exe" and would work the way you said. If you extract
this file, then you get alot of 'eula' and 'res' files plus a few others along withe the netfx.msi, although
the 'cab' file is embedded and compressed within the 'msi' file. Trying to stick these other files into the
msi package like the way the cab file was done.
If one runs the "msi installer validation suite" that comes with ORCA, you'll see that each of the netfx.msi
files for all the various .NET versions have about 5-6 errors each with alot of warnings (mostly
string overflow errors). How, these .NET packages install without error is beyond me!
I'm trying to update each of the msi files with the corresponding ".msp" patch file that MSoft provides.
They patch the msi ok, but the errors still exist and of course now, the .NET framework versions
won't install now......
Now trying to figure out how to repair them.
The other way is through the AIP (Administration install point) with the patches. Everything installs,
but if one has to reinstall or do a repair of the .NET packages, the directories used are where the
AIP is at, and not the default directories that came with the .NET software. Thus, I have to keep the
AIP files around to do reinstalls and repairs. I'd like to get rid of it. Thus, I'm looking into how to
fix the original 'msi' files and how to put all files and patches in only one file (the msi file) for each .NET version.
I can create a patched 'msi' file with ORCA, but the same problems mentioned above about the original
errors occurs, plus new ones due to the patches occur. To get ORCA to create the 'msi' file, one has to trick
ORCA into doing this.

If I remember your activiation is in the file "WPA.DBL". Save that file and copy it back
to the same directory and same permissions etc after reinstalling your OS.

Yes, I've had this problem in XP and Win 2K using the filemanager "explorer" too - for years. I just ignored
it since it usually comes back after awhile. I just asssumed it was a memory leak in explorer.
I don't have a solution to the problem.....
